Who's the artist? (Rockin Amazing grace)

I just heard a version of Amazing Grace that was pretty cool, but I have no idea who the artist is. It starts out with the normal bagpipes doing amazing grace, but then it kicks into some rocking guitar and bagpipes.

I’m Scottish and Irish, and I had a pal on the police force who was killed in the line of duty, so Amazing Grace on the pipes makes me weak in the knees. I’d love to track down the artist so I can finally listen to that song without getting depressed.

One band that does a version of Amazing Grace similar to what you described is the Dropkick Murphys. It is on their recent live album Live on St. Patrick’s Day, as well as their studio album The Gang’s All Here from 1999. The live version has vocals, the studio version does not.

Grrr… this thread’s only 20 minutes old, and someone’s already beaten me to mention the Dropkick Murphys. Sometimes you just can’t win. Since I’m here I’ll add that they do “Scotland the Brave” in a similar fashion, although their version is called “Cadence to Arms”.

I KNEW the SDMB would pull through!

I’m off to eBay/Half/CDNow! (I buy more damn music now that I have Kazaa, those morons at the record companies should get a clue)

Thanks guys.

I thought of Dropkick before I even opened the thread. It is an amazing version of the song. They played it when I saw them a few years ago and it was great.

Slight nitpick–the studio version does, indeed have vocals–they’re just buried really deep in the mix. I’d been listening to the song every day for a week before I noticed it. You probably won’t notice them without some stereo headphones turned up pretty loud, but they’re there.

BTW, check out the version of Amazing Grace done by the Five Blind Boys of Alabama - it’s a bluesy version done to the music from “House of the Rising Sun”. Awesome!
