Who's the best example of "voluptuous"?

We can only pick one?!? Feh ! I picked Jane Russell but really. Please. One?

Sofia Vergara sure. But there are others who personify voluptuous to me. The word conjures up a woman who is just shy of zoftig. N’est pas?

Jane Russell was. At one point, when she shot “Working Girl”, Melanie Griffith was deeply voluptuous. Took my breath away, because that type of woman winds my clock.

At her heaviest, Drew Barrymore was voluptuous. But my kids-daughter especially- were so horrified that I found her to be hot. " Eewww DAD ! The girl from E.T.??!!! " :stuck_out_tongue:

For some reason, I do not picture women who are of shorter than average stature as being able to be voluptuous. It seems there needs to be a certain length of limb, especially the woman’s legs.

Ha! What an utterly weird thing to be writing.

Wow. Thanks for bringing my childhood rushing back in a nostalgic wave of saudade and heartache.

Anyway, I agree that plumper ladies have been trying to steal the term ‘voluptuous’ for years now. I don’t think that’s fair. They already have such great words such as zaftig and rubenesque. They should leave ‘voluptuous’ to the Beyonces and Kim Kardashians.

The most breathtaking examples of voluptuous is what I see in the little dance clubs/bars I go to on weekends. Those women are amazing to look at. I can’t figure out how they can possibly have hips and thighs and booties and tits like that while rocking those flat tummies. Unreal. Even the ones who have a bit of pudge in the belly still manage amazing hour glass figures that are just stunning to watch.

They own the word voluptuous, and chubbies should let it go. It could be worst for them. All the *really *big gals got is BBW, which sucks donkey balls.

Win.

Kat Dennings certainly fits the bill for me. (BTW, she is 5’ 5")

You’ve left one out: Kirsten Vangsness, who plays Penelope Garcia on Criminal Minds. Although she wears outlandish clothes and makes herself look intellectual by wearing glasses, that Unnhhh! shows right through.

For those who wanted to pick more than one from the list, check out Voluptuous Women – Part 2 – Your Top Five All-Time and add to the list there. Rather than posting a new slate of names for a poll just yet, maybe we can narrow the list down some by going for Top Five candidates. Those making more than one or two individuals’ lists will be in the next poll – if there needs to be one.

Personally, I think of zaftig as being a bit more bottom-heavy, and voluptuous as being a bit more top-heavy.

But that’s always the way of things. Nobody wants to think of themselves as “fat”, so as soon as a term becomes colloquially thought of as “the chubbies”, women try to shift to the next “not quite fat” term to describe themselves. It’s really a case of false advertising corrupting the word.

Telling me to learn the word “zaftig” doesn’t really do any good, because the definition descriptions are not noticably different than other words like “voluptuous”, and it comes down to providing samples, i.e. pictures, which reverts to this thread, where people are disagreeing over what the words mean.

This is the best thread I have ever read on the SDMB. I am very uncomfortable at work right now. And thank you, I had never seen or heard of Nigella Lawson before, now I’m in love.

I voted for Salma Hayek, although Sofia Vergara really ought to be on the list.

Much as I admire her face, her spirit and her work, her boobage deteriorated sharply between Titanic (1997) and The Reader (2008). Time and tide wait for no man, er, shapely starlet.

When I think “Voluptuous”, I think “Hourglass” figures, and this list (no nudes, but some in bikinis and corsets) does describe most of them. I think the definition of hourglass is that the bust and hips are within 1" of each other, but the waist is 9 inches smaller (or greater differential) than either of the other two measurements. Many of the ladies mentioned in this thread appear in this list.

I would throw Sofia Vergara and Kim Kardashian into that list too. You can’t simply ignore them when they are walking down a street.

Eh, a lot of those pictures only have such pronounced hourglasses because of corsets. That doesn’t really count, in my opinion.

But most of them had the measurements listed…that’s what counts.

That color pic of Gina Lollobrigida is simply beautiful.

NSFW, unless you have headphones:

That’s both brilliant and hilarious.

I don’t know how I’m supposed to choose one. Several of them are good examples of voluptuousness.

Anyway, I would add Kim Kardashian, Sofia Vergara, Scarlett Johansen, …
… Oh, I see Zeldar’s already re-compiling

Do check out that link in Post #91 as well as the new “Part 2” thread.

I thought “Jayne Mansfield” before I opened the thread, so I voted for her.

I’d cite Nigella if asked for a prime living example.

I’m with DMark on this. She’s a classic beauty.

Voluptuous is NOT restricted to a curvaceous figure.

Angelina Jolie has very voluptuous lips.

I voted for Marilyn Monroe. Am surprised Jane Russell is doing poorly: she was the rare actress who could hold her own as co-star to Monroe. Since face and personality certainly matter to “voluptuousness” I might have voted for Rita Hayworth instead of Monroe if she were on the list. (And at 36-24-36 when she was young, she’d hardly be considered to have a “plain” figure.)

Silent-screen?? I hope this is intended as a joke.
