Even among the many lies and distortions in President Donald Trump‘s never-ending address to Congress on Tuesday evening, one claim stood out. The chief executive of the United States told the country that the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had uncovered an outrageous expenditure authorized by the previous administration: a whopping $8 million “for making mice transgender.”
As for the “transgender” mice, it’s possible that the Trump regime’s sweeping efforts to root out language associated with diversity, equity, and inclusion led them to health studies that involve “transgenic” mice, lab research mice that have been genetically altered to better model human disease response. They have been called a “revolutionary research resource” for medical advancements.

Next up: eliminating the Department of Transportation. Why should the government spend millions or billions of dollars supporting the infrastructure to help trans people get from one place to another?
What floors me is not that Trump believed it, but that the myriad of people who fed him this info couldn’t rub two brain cells together before giving it to him.

I did not watch the speech (Spore seemed more interesting) but apparently he said that he wanted the CHIPs Act slashed, or words to that effect? Assuming he didn’t mean the insurance program for kids, it seems that getting rid the the CHIPS and Science Act would be a tough sell. Of course, Trump’s cuddled up to the Taiwanese semiconductor makers, so this isn’t a surprise.
No, Trump was talking about funding for animal models of gender affirming hormone treatment, which is a reasonable and useful thing to study. Countries should be funding more of this kind of research, not less.
