I was sorting thru all my CD’s this morning and came across alot of my old discs. Poison. Skid Row. Motley Crue. I played a bunch of them and was instantly transported to the time of tightly laced high tops, acid washed jeans, and fishnet shirts.
I don’t claim that they were great musicians, but Poison was a great band for the simple fact that they had alot of tunes you could get laid, get drunk, or get in a fight too.
So I ask you, who are your favorite cock rockers? Mine, in order of cock rockingness are:
Poison.
Motley Crue.
Faster Pussycat.
Skid Row (Best vocalist of the cock rock era)
Ginger Lynn (She definetely rocked cocks)
GnR was more of a straight Hard Rock band than they were cock rockers IMHO. or else they would be #1.
Guess I’m going to have to go with Skid Row. I saw Bach a few years ago and he still had a good voice. Second would have to be Motley Crue. Poison sucked and thanks you now have on of their songs stuck in my head.
Wow, Tyketto. I thought I was the only one who remembered them. I LOVE them. And Night Ranger does indeed rock. Triumph, amazing. I still worship the fingers Rik Emmett plays that guitar with. Add in Zebra and Def Leppard and you have the soundtrack to my youth.
But… are these bands I just named really “cock rock”? I think its more “big hair metal” than anything. The bands named in the OP are more sleaze rock than the ones named here.
Just picking nits… don’t mind me. Carry on with this most excellent thread.
Dr. Righteous, did you ever see them live? They were very good, but my god, the singer could talk. In the ‘rambling on and on for hours in between songs, spewing cliches’ competition, I would have to give joint first place to:
Sebastian Bach
Brett Michaels
the singer from Tyketto who’s name I’ve forgotten.
I’ve seen them live twice, but not back in the day - I saw them in Brooklyn only a year or two ago. They’re together and recording under the name Vaughn and performing every once in a great blue moon. I have no idea about then, but this time around Vaughn didn’t talk a whole lot between songs. And yes, he still sounds great and they do a lot of the classic stuff live.
I think my “shut up and sing” award has to go to Kevin Cronin from REO Speedwagon. Not only does he not shut up, his stories are always the same.

Dokken
Tesla
Cinderella
Crue
Poison
Slaughter
Winger
Warrant
Vinnie Vincent Invasion
I don’t think Ozzy, Dio, Maiden should be mentioned in connection with this thread…
I recently saw Cinderella on a club tour. They always sound good live and 2002 is no exception.
Crue is rumored to be planning a 2003-4 tour in conjunction with the release of the movie based on their collective autobiography “Dirt”.
Poison tour ever other summer and their show should not be missed. Bret Michaels still sounds great and CC Deville always has some classic drunken moments.
Dokken dont sound so great live anymore but they did actually release a decent album a few years ago. The title track - Erase the Slate sounds like classic Dokken.
Tesla were touring last year. Saw them. Sound perfect. Damn good show.
Winger and Warrant still tour and although I would never admit to liking them back in the day, I do enjoy thier music now. Winger opened for Poison this summer and the quote of the night had to come from Kip Winger. During the chorus for “17” he says…
She’s only 17… ah hell I’m getting to old for this shit…Daddy says she’s too young but she’s old enough for me
Vinnie Vincent is too busy suing Kiss to do anything else but the two Invasion albums are classic cockrock (oh how I hate that term). Last I heard he was working at a 7-11 in Chicago - swear to god.
