I have always been thin (5’5"/110lbs) and have always had small boobs (flat until 16ish, small boobs thru college, huge when pregnant/nursing, back to small b after kids). But I am now in my late 40s and my boobs have gone up to a C. My weight and body mass are still the same. So why are my boobs getting bigger? They always swell up during my period, but for the past 6 months or so have been getting gradually bigger. Periods are still normal and no signs of menopause. Any idea what’s up?
Any new medication?
Any diet changes?
Living in a new location, getting food from a new place?
There could be triggers for hormonal changes in things you ingest.
None! Everything has been business as usual. And usually, when my boobs engorge from pms, they always hurt and I feel all hormonal. But I’m right in the midst of my cycle right now and they are huge with no pms-like symptoms
Maybe The Secret really works!
You’re in luck! I happen to be a certified Boobologist, but it will be difficult to provide a diagnosis without pics.
Alright then, I’ll say it. I’ll say it because we all know The Rules of The Intarwebz:
Pics Or It Didn’t Happen
;):D:p
 @ last 2 posts
If your weight is the same and your boobs are getting bigger, where else are you gaining fat or girth? And are you therefore losing mass elsewhere?
You could be shedding a small amount of muscle mass, and thus storing a little more fat due to a slightly lower metabolism.
That said, if it’s only the boobs (or even if it’s not) that may be a marker of hormonal changes, and not necessarily the expected age-related kind. Maybe this is your first clue that something worrying is happening to your ovaries, or some other gland.
“Could be nothing, could be a tumor,” is probably not what you were hoping for, but if it’s a really weird change and worrying you, you may need to see a doctor.
I really, really hope you are female.
Maybe the rest of you is just shrinking.
Any changes to your diet? There is some evidence that soy acts as a phytoestrogen, and even male vegetarians who consume a lot of soy based meat and dairy replacements can have increased breast tissue. If not, sounds like a visit to the doc to have estrogen levels and a look around the reproductive parts. Maybe it’s just one of nature’s generous gifts, but have everything checked out just in case.
Wow, four whole posts before the stupid came.
I’m a guy so you’ll have to forgive me if I’m adding on to the stupid but I vaguely remember of hearing stories about women randomly producing (milk). Something to do with hormones I think.
Well, if that ain’t a stealth brag, I’ve never seen one. However, it’s worth checking out with your doctor. Boobs are glands, and can react to all sorts of things that go on with your body.
Then you’ll find the phenomenon of witch’s milk interesting. It’s milk that comes from the breast of a newborn baby due to the mother’s hormones. Freaky deaky, right?
Also, I came to this thread hoping for tips. <rimshot>
Next time, wear undies in the sandbox.
Any chance you could be lactating? Unexpected lactation is not uncommon. It’s generally not serious but it should get checked out.
I am currently lactating, my son weaned 8 months ago but 2 months ago I found dried milk on my nipples and I found I could express a little milk. My doctor isn’t very concerned, I have normal prolactin levels so we’re in wait and see mode for the moment. I haven’t had any weight change either, although the boobs are a little bigger (and perkier yay!)
Any chance you could be pregnant?
You could have refrained from comment and kept the sand out of your own.
IOW, stop with the insults.
It wasn’t really an insult, more of a snarky jibe.
I am definitely not lactating nor am I pregnant (I’m 48 and hubby has been snipped). It’s possible that maybe some of my muscle has turned to fat, but it just seems weird that it’s only in my breasts.
And I’m well past the point in life that this would be a welcomed change. 25 years ago, I probably would have celebrated. Now it’s just a nuisance since I am a runner and now have to wear 2 jogging bras, which sucks.
I realize it could be a tumor on my pituitary or somewhere else, but I was sort of hoping someone would stop in and say–Yep same thing happened to me before menopause due to higher estrogen levels or whatever. I have noticed that people’s breast tissue seems to increase with age (even men ), but I always thought that was due to increased body fat, which I’ve managed to keep at bay with diet and excercise.
Troppus, I did give up all soy products after reading that could be a contributor a few months ago, so I’m thinking it’s hormones within my own body acting up–just not sure why the hormones are raging.
And lol at the requests for pics. My husband is in your camp–the more the merrier as far as he’s concerned. And DvorJaques, mine are perkier too! Just wish I knew why. Is the dr doing anything about your lactation or did s/he offer any explanation?
Yeah, yeah, I know–just go to the doctor. But I hate the doctor and was hoping one of you smart people could just tell me what is up.
My doctor did actually refer me to an endocrinologist, but she didn’t want to see me since my hormone levels are normal (he only tested prolactin and Thyroid though). I’ll be going back to my doctor in the next few weeks after I have a repeat ultrasound to check on some para-ovarian cysts, my theory is that the cysts are affecting my ovaries somehow and that’s confusing my boobs, depending on the state of the cysts he may decide to investigate further.
You could be lactating and not realize it, my boobs don’t leak milk, or at least not enough for me to notice, I only noticed dried milk once. But they are a little painful at times, kinda like pre menstrual pain but at different times in my cycle.
I wouldn’t lose sleep over it, boobs definitely do change with differing hormone levels, I’ve cycled up and down 3 cup sizes between being pill-free, on the pill, pregnant and lactating. I’m pill-free at the moment, and even before I started lactating again I was cup size up from when I was pill-free and 19 years old (I’m 34 now).
I would mention it to the doctor, you know your body the best and if you’re not sure why something is happening it’s best to put your mind at rest. Chances are slim that it’s a brain tumor, and if it is a prolactinoma is practically the best kind of brain tumor you can have
Although I think it’s wonderful you’ve found your place in the snark world maybe you could possibly consider that the OP is asking a question that’s serious to her and all of the “OMG BOOOBBZZZZ!!!” responses that seem to be beyond the control of many men here on the SDMB just aren’t appropriate? I’m all for fun and games but it would be simply lovely if a woman could ask a question about anatomy once in a while without the desperate creepers of the durp coming in to remind us how much they just can’t ignore the word boobs.
