I tried to e-mail the Afghanistan thread to a friend, using the “e-mail this to a friend” button. It sent me to a page telling me that I wasn’t logged on. ??? I had been replying to posts, the homepage welcomed me by name, how can I be not logged on? What am I missing?
I believe that button has been disabled for a little while now. I can’t remember why, exactly, but possibly because of some hacking that went on.
What I do, if I want to to send someone a thread, is just copy and paste the link into an email. Of course, I’m sure you already knew how to do that! 
(Actually, the main reason I always do that is because I never even noticed the feature you just mentioned until someone else said something about it being disabled several weeks ago. Color me reeeeealll observant!)
If you’re using Internet Explorer, you can try clicking on file/send/page to e-mail.
Sadly, we had to disable that function; it was being used to spam and harass other people.

Right-Click, Send Page.
