The banner on the bottom of the ordinary definition version says “Available in HD”. But the Discovery HD channel never seems to have it on, and I’ve scanned the listings to find it without any luck! What’s up with that?
I need to see all those crabs and those chain-smoking captains much more clearly than I do! Especially when Captain Phil is coughing up blood again. I can’t make a decent diagnosis if I can’t see better!
[sub]Captain Sig is the Han Solo of crab captains![/sub]
They posted some sort of schedule for him - looks like he spends his time equally at pubs and grocery stores. No idea if he’s signing packages of crab legs in the freezer section, or if Josh eats so much that he has to go shopping twice a day:
There are, confusingly, two Discovery channels in HD. There’s a channel called simply Discovery HD, which replicates the programming of the standard definition Discovery Channel. There’s also Discovery HD Theater, which has completely different programming. For the longest time, my cable provider only had Discovery HD Theater; it only recently started the standard Discovery Channel in HD, along with TLC, Animal Planet, History Channel and the like in HD.
Just a “me too” to Terminus Est’s post. Here’s my lineup - I get Discovery HD Theater on 836, Discovery Channel HD on 846 (right after Lifetime Movie Network HD - what joy!)
Does anyone else think the season has really picked up since Opilio season started? King crab was kind of dull, but between the Colburn brothers going at it continually, Phil’s declining health, and greenhorns dropping like flies, it’s gotten a lot better.
I’m gonna have to complain to my cable provider! It’s definitely absent from my Discovery HD channel.
I must admit I was surprised by Phil’s diagnosis when I saw it made. Not in retrospect, of course. I slapped myself for not considering it in his differential. I placed much too much emphasis on his chest trauma as being the probable cause of his symptoms. I really expected a hemothorax/hemomediastinum and torn pleura and lung tissue.
I also was wonder a couple of things about the show, for instance, do they have Japanese/Russian/Other competitors, and do they show them/their reactions to them? Also, since the show got popular, have a bunch of wannabes shown up trying to be greenhorns?

I get a jones for crab every time I watch that show!
Big fan of both shows. The blowups are the best part of DC, and watching that whiny fuck who quit his job on the first day [can’t remember his name] on IRC is a hoot too.
I’m wondering if you confusing Discovery HD (the high-defintion version of the regular Discovery Channel) with Discovery’s HD Theater channel (carries Sunrise Earth, had the magnificent Planet Earth series). I had the same issue when I first got DishNetwork; they carried standard definition Discovery Channel and HD Theater. The recently added Discovery Channel HD.
Speaking of, am I the only one who thinks Captain Keith is a pompous blowhard who knows next to nothing about how to manage and motivate people? Every time I see his face on the screen I want to punch my TV.
My wife loves IRT, moreso last season because she lived in Yellowkinfe for 8 years (Trivia note: the city of YK told Discovery Chanel not to return this year because the film crew were suck demanding dicks, they must have been amazingly obnoxious for that to happen, as it probably meant millions of dollars in revenue for YK.), but the commercials drive her insane, and I mean ready to throw heavy objects through the TV insane: Ice Road Truckers, An AMERICAN ORIGINAL series. Everyone on that show is Canadian and it takes place in Canada. Pisses her right the fuck off, it does.
I haven’t even seen that one yet. What an enormous ass.
My favorite moment was when he was interviewing prospective greenhorns over a satellite phone and asking them “Why do you want to be a crab fisherman?” I was looking for a book on his bulkhead entitled “How to conduct an interview like a 1980’s management consultant.”
He was a complete dick about that firing. I don’t follow the show religiously, but it’s on Discovery HD so frikkin’ often (sorry Qadgop) that I couldn’t avoid it if I wanted to. Most of the captains seem pretty decent, but not him - he comes across as someone who has an inferiority complex and overcompensates.
You should have seen the first episode of the season when he pulled the entire crew off their jobs to look for a styrofoam Cup 'O Noodles cup for a few hours. The reason? It’s “good luck” for him to spit his tobacco juice into it.
Not so much. We all drive on the ice up there. These guys just do it in great big trucks.
My sister lives on an island 10 miles out of Yellowknife. That’s how we get to the house in winter - cross one lake, drive on a short portage, then another mile or so on another lake.
