Why can't I multi-quote in a post?

I do it manually. It’s not that big a deal if people use the defaults.* But if a post has multiple quotes in it, it is definitely a huge pain.

I believe it is something that had to be deliberately disabled. It works properly in Instant Messages.

*You use multiquote, and move the tags a bit. With firefox, you can just highlight and drag the quote into place. [noparse]

becomes

[/noparse]

Can someone from TPTB confirm that this has been disabled or not?

Also, is there another board out there that folks frequent that use the same software as this message board that have the function that I’m looking for?

I have been a member of theJeopardy fan board for about a year before I became a Doper, and became quite familiar with yaBB code and the like from frequent posting over there. I’ve come across (but am not a member of) other boards (like the giraffe board mentioned in another ATMB thread, which is basically a SDMB offshoot board) that use the same software, so it must be popular for discussion boards, I’m guessing.

Nested quotes are indented. Am I just imagining this, or does everyone that does this on the board do this manually?

I can’t believe that this is a manual process for everyone. And like I said, I do remember having this function at some time in the past.

I’m going to try a number of different things in this thread to see if I can figure out what you are suggesting as well as how to get my nested quote post to look like it should. I know I had this function before, because doing it manually is just too tedious.

Yeah the geniuses at vB thought that getting rid of nested quotes was an “improvement”.

The only argument I’ve heard in favor of getting rid of them is that if you have someone nested quote like 20 posts, the last bunch end up only a few characters wide.

]See what I mean? Of course, this really isn’t a problem since people generally DON’T do this many nested quotes. And it’s still readable.

Also, thanks for clearing up my confusion. It was part of the software, but has been removed as part of an “upgrade”. :dubious:

The thing that kills me is they could have simply said that you can’t nest more than, say, 5 quotes automatically.

Yeah, it seems like you can’t preserve a nested quote. You could use multi-quote instead. To use multi-quote, select the “” button for each post you want to quote, then click the Post Reply button at the bottom of the thread. All the posts you selected will appear as quotes in your reply box.
