Why can't we close our own threads?

Manny, why not let thread starters close their own threads?
Often, in my case, I ask a specific question when I start
a thread; then after I get a reasonable survey of answers
really don’t care anymore. I’m sure many others are the same way. Anyway, when this point is reached, doesn’t it make more sense to save server resources and prevent further
posts?

Ohh! Ooh! I know the answer to this one (read it in ATMB, I think)

If you could close your own thread, you’d have Trolls doing things like posting long, insulting messages, or people witnessing then closing the thread before they could be responded to.

Fenris.

hey javaman, why don’t you close this thread and move it to ATMB ? :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d like to add to Fenris’ answer that the threads are not merely for you to get an answer to your question. They also provide us board people with entertainment. When we’re done playing with it, it will sink to the bottom of the thread pile…

I do not see the logig. When you open a thread it is there for everybody to contribute whatever they want. I do not think you own the thread in any way. You can always ask the moderator to close it for you but even this I believe is a bad idea as people should be allowed to contribute. I have had a couple of instances where I had to start new threads to post my view on something in a closed thread. i do not think this is a good idea.

And BTW, this belongs in About this message board, doesn’t it?

Wow, I wonder about an analogy!

Could a market, based on individuals entering into economic praxes voluntarily, of their own volition, actually work toward ferretting out junk goods from good goods, just like free readers can, by their apathy, send a thread to the bottom of the pile or else by their enthusiasm send a good thread to the top?

Hmmm. Maybe call it a “free-market” or some such.

[… starts daydreaming …]

See ya in ATMB! (Or maybe GD now!)

WHenever moderators discuss this, they come to the same conclusion, that it is better to allow editing, closing, moving, etc to be controlled by a small group of moderators rather than by each individual.

If you would like your thread closed, you need only ask a moderator or administrator, who will be happy to comply (or to tell you why it wouldn’t be a good idea.)

Dex got the reasons, and we are pretty good about closing threads at the OP’s request as long as the reason is a valid one.

Also, we have the ability to turn off the email notification function, so the thread can live but the OP doesn’t have to be reminded about it every time someone posts.

Just drop me an email if you have any questions.

And indeed, this thread is off to ATMB.
