Liberal, I suppose shouldn’t be surprised that you are mocking my use of the word ‘solipsistic’ in its everyday sense of seeing oneself as the center of the universe, as opposed to its precise philosophical sense, when you insist on using the name “Liberal” in a sense that is utterly contrary to contemporary everyday usage.
Not actually being especially stupid (but you’re right, it’s not changing much in one direction or the other these days), I clearly understand your point that people view things from the basis of their own experience. My point, which you seem quite determined to avoid acknowledging, possibly because it would prevent you from assuming the self-righteousness that you seem to wear like armor, is that when one knows one’s own experience to have been unusual and that this experience makes one hypersensitive on a given topic, it behoves one to take special care to avoid projecting that on to situations in which one’s unusual experiences are unlikely to actually apply. One actually needs to make an effort to do this, btw - to actually *try * to see how someone else might be seeing things, as opposed to immediately reacting on the basis of one’s own experience. You prefer to respond with some wordy twaddle in effect rationalizing a totally straight-jacketed view point and denying that it is possible to condemn someone else, only oneself. Funny how much in your case it *appears * that you are condemning someone else.
On the one hand, you demand recognition that only you can know and therefore judge your own viewpoint and subsequent actions, and that those actions can only be based on your prior experience. On the other hand, you are as quick as anyone I’ve seen on these boards to judge others as stupid, immoral, or having an overblown ego, such as:

Only in the US have authoritarian hand-wringers appropriated the word liberal — from Latin, meaning “freedom” — for themselves. The sense in which you use the term is contrary both to common sense and to contemporary everyday usage all over the world.
You keep making my point for me. My circumstances seem “unusual” to you based on your own experience. But it is not objectively so unusual. The mortality rate, and health problems in general, are rather high in very low socio-economic classes, which is where I’m from.

That’s what I can’t figure out about this thread. It seems like Liberal apologized way back when and the apology was accepted. Shouldn’t that have been the end of it? Then someone (Oyl?) jumped in and said “Not so fast!” or words to that effect. Wha’ happen’?

is an okay start, but it’s not exactly a relevant apology. Calling it “an unfortunate misinterpretation” leaves utterly unclear who misinterpreted what. You, sir, misinterpreted my words (which is fine, I accept responsibility for expressing myself in a way that made that possible), but then went on to make up a whole story about what I intended to do and what my friend’s situation actually was/is – and took it upon yourself to present this misinterpretation which you haven’t even owned up to in a public forum in a way that invites others to join in your condemnation of me.
I’m still waiting for an apology for that.

You accused twickster of choosing Donald Trump over a dying friend, fabricating a good deal of the scenario, and have admitted that you were projecting your own biases on her. In all fairness, that deserves an apology all its own. I’m sure twickster is quite worried about her friend, and it’s really harsh to make her feel like she’s not being a good enough friend to him at a time like this. Do you care that you hurt her feelings for no good reason? If so, be compassionate. It’s the time of year for that sort of thing.
