Why can't you say fat people are disgusting?

Wow. That’s such a lame argument. Dood. Listen, some people can’t help the fact that they’re fat. Could be genetic, could be a disease, they might be disabled on top of the fact they’re obese, which leaves exercise as not an option. Sorry to hear you’re so pissed off at fat people, you think the government needs to tax them. Asshole.

Smokers can just stop smoking. But everybody has to eat.

I’d answer, but feeding time is over for today.

And btw, that wasn’t 2 1/2 inches of fun. . . it was more like 1/2 inch of pointing and laughing.

Toodles!

You got a reason from the moderator who closed your thread, and if you will look at my replies to this thread you will see a further explanation as to what the moderator’s words mean, from a member who has seen the various forum rules explained again and again. Really, they used the word Debate in the forum title for a reason. (IANAMod)

Then why bother posting a thread? Why not just send emails to moderators and administrators? Come to think of it, please just send emails to mods and admins. Do the rest of us a favour.

Well, this is true, but some of us are just fat because we eat too much food and don’t exercise enough. Lets not fool ourselves here that 60% of Americans are suffering from hypothyroidism, right? I’m one of the “likes food more than being thin, has an excellent (evolutionarily) metabolism that extracts every possible calorie out of food” folks. Am I “disgusting” as a result? Sure, to some people. To others, I’m still underweight for their tastes. And for yet others, I’m just right.

I don’t have a problem with any *individual *feeling disgust when he looks at me (well, wait, of course I have a problem with it, it makes me feel bad - but in as an opinion, it’s still a valid one), but to say that I’m disgusting, full stop, is simply inaccurate.

Geez, I just got here and I can smell the bullshit. Sure you wanted the opinions of posters here, you just don’t like the ones you’re getting. If you wanted an admin opinion you would have PM a mod or emailed an admin.

You can read what Tomndebb said when your thread was closed. I guess you need it spelled out for you.

Oh, I think people would still be calling you an asshole, but maybe you wouldn’t be quite as deserving of the appellation as you are now.

From what I’ve read, it isn’t so much that you have expressed an unpopular view as that you have made an insupportable claim and represented it as truth. If you can go dig up some reputable research that proves that fat people are indeed disgusting in some objective fashion AND that it is right and proper to tax people on the basis of their ability to disgust, then you might have something worth debating.

To be honest, I won’t be holding my breath. (Well, except around those disgusting smokers!)

If you wish to deride the quality of his argument you have to be honest about it.

Are you seriously suggesting that the vast majority of obese people have genetic disorders or diseases that have led to them being obese?

I think it would be pretty safe to say that the majority of obese people are that way because they don’t exercise enough and eat too much, both of which can be solved as easily as the smoker stopping smoking.

While I don’t agree with his statement in the original OP at all, I think he is right to believe that if he had made the comment about smokers no-one would have cared. They are routinely described in those kinds of terms.

When you consider that the OP, in his closed thread, was claiming that any % bodyfat over 14% was disgustingly obese, yes, I will claim that the majority of obese people (using his definition, now) are that way through genetic conditions.

Back when I thought I could actually lose enough weight to feel like I could fit in with the general population I was running ~15-20 miles a week, and constantly hungry. And I still fought to keep my percent bodyfat down to 20%.

Now, if you want to use a more reasonable definition of obese, say 25%, then I would be more inclined to agree with you. But 14%? It’s very easy on a 1800-2000 calorie diet to be over that, while getting what most people would consider a sufficient amount of exercise.

Just be glad the OP is a guest and won’t be around for long. It doesn’t sound as if the OP is the kind to pony up for pay to post.

Just another troll hanging about until the guest membership expires.

OMG we’re taking away his first ammendment rights and being all nazi fascists and shit

Given that this is an American internet message board, do you think your target audience will trend towards the thin side or the portly side?
Look, as a general rule, most people tend to find morbidly obese ‘The Biggest Loser’ contestant type people physically unattractive. It may not be their fault, but that’s the way it is. Models tend to be thin for a reason however there is a vast gray area between the Olsen twins and having a crane carry you out of your home where people define attractiveness.

The reasons you don’t SAY it or at least you don’t say it with as much scorn as the OP is are many:

-They are generally already aware of prejudice against them
-Most would not choose to be so heavy
-Many have emotional shit going on that has caused or is caused by their weight
-YOU generally ain’t getting any thinner
-It makes you sound like an asshole

Probably, yes.

I saw that thread early and thought the same thing so after I took a screenshot (I have an unnatural fascination) I searched his previous threads. A little odd, a little interesting, but trolling not really. Now I realize we’ve seen this procedure before… Guest starts a couple dummy threads, unloads what they believe is an obscene bombshell for chuckles, then gets the chance to yell about how oppressed they are.

Blah blah blah. 2.5 inches of whatever, please take my advice as someone who will accept bad first impressions, since you’re new here what you said came off as very offensive. While you attempted to veil it in a GD question everyone who read it saw was an insult, that fat people are disgusting.

Take your opinions, take them to IMHO, just please explain why you feel that way and be prepared to be mauled.

You’re probably a troll, yes I know. But for the sake of redemption you have the opportunity to say that you didn’t realize that your question would be misconstrued and apologize to people whom you may have offended.

Or you could keep pouting in the Pit and get nowhere.
Good morning all.

Well, since is head is obviously up his ass, he can be both.

I think it just boils down to the fact that insults aren’t permitted in Great Debates. I’m sure if you google “women” and “cumcatcher” you would come up with many hits as well. That doesn’t make it a legitimate topic of debate.

By saying fat people are gross and disgusting, that is a Pit thread and not a debate. He was right to close the thread…

Agreed.

If you wanted a serious, rational debate, you should not have said (much less led off with) an entirely subjective opinion, especially one likely to offend large numbers of people (or numbers of large people).

If, on the other hand, you wanted to express your displeasure at something (like the way people look), you should have posted in the Pit, not Great Debates. An insult or disparagement does not become a debate simply by prefacing it with “There oughta be a law against…” (or in your case, “There oughta be a tax on…”)

What kind of reaction to your statement did you expect to get? If you expected people to get upset and offended, then you were trolling. (What is a troll?) If not, you need to take a bit more time thinking about how you’ll come across to people before you post.

You’re an idiot. Happy?

Well, now I’m angered. The OP cannot even bother to put my name in the thread title, depriving me of my points in the “Mods Pitted Stupidly” race.

Two and a Half Inches of Fun, opening a debate with an insulting comment that is sure to bring in far more attacks on the poster than contributions to the alleged point of discussion is pretty much the essence of trolling. It sets the poster up as the (rather legitimate) target of a fair amount of ridicule.

That is not the way to engage in a debate on the SDMB. It is possible to find threads that started off (badly) with inadvertant dumb comments. Some have even been allowed to hang on in that Forum if enough posters responded to the debate rather than to the insulting nonsense.
There was nothing inadvertant about your comment.
Your comment was irrelevant to your argument (which purported to be an economic discussion).
The immediate responses tended to ignore the economic aspect while focusing on your rudeness and stupidity.

As to trolling: most of your threads have the damp smell one finds beneath old bridges, but that one was blatant.
