Why did 45% of Hispanic voters vote for Trump?

Well, maybe the BDSM stuff.

Not yet, but once the Trumpists get around to destroying the social safety net that might change.

Yeah, I didn’t know that BDSM came with an ideology.

Part of the issue is that hispanic voters are not a monolith. There are many different subcategories. Cubans for example, tend to be very socially conservative and patriarchal. They may vote Republican for these reasons.

However, the reasons I have heard personally boil down to the following:

  1. The economy-prices have gone up and the Democrats are saying things are improving but prices are not down to where they were when Trump was President. Trump says he’ll fix it.

  2. Immigration-I came here legally and jumped through a lot of hoops to do so. Why should somebody be allowed to just walk across the border and be given food, housing and medical care when I have to work so hard for everything?
I have heard the latter from someone whose sister’s partner and father of her niece is undocumented, but she somehow believes that they will really just be going after all the criminals. She also believes that South American countries are sending all of their criminals here and that this is who Trump wants to deport.

Here’s the GOP Fear and Faith platform in a nut shell (and dating back a few elections, now):

*They’re turning this country socialist, like Venezuela
*They’re giving this country over to illegals and brown people [1]
*They’re going to ban your guns and your religion
*They’re teaching your children to be ashamed of their race, their heterosexuality, and their ethnicity
*They’re turning your cities into war-torn cesspools
*Your children are utterly not safe in Librul 'Murica
*You won’t be able to buy a 17 ounce fountain drink anywhere
*We’ll all be forced to eat nothing but kale. An In-n-Out Double Double burger will be a Felony. And you’ll have to eat out, because appliances will all be banned
*They’re using Agenda 21 to force us all to live in cramped barracks and drive Smart cars
*Bill Gates is going to inject a chip into you, after which, Big Brother will own you
*You’ll pay 105% of your income in taxes
*You’ll have to marry interracial, have LGBTQ kids, and get an abortion. You’ll just have to
*They want us to bend down at the waist for Putin and Xi
*We’ll all be buying Teslas for non-English speaking Welfare recipients
*Cats, dogs —> snacks
*FOR THE LOVE OF GRID … BENGHAZI !!!

And I really could go on and on.

They’re evil, but they’re generally not stupid.

If Democrats really do need to reach people who are vulnerable to this kind of marketing effort, I simply don’t know how they could. Whatever other qualities that cohort has, it will be hard to bypass these lizard-brain, existential issues to talk intelligently to them about the reality of “their economic interests.”

[1] This really isn’t an inherent contradiction – more paradoxical. Those who came here legally … famously (and – arguably – with just cause) really look down on line jumpers … at least stereotypically. There’s also some truth to the notion that a legal, hard-working immigrant sees competition from somebody in the country illegally who may do the same work.

You forgot Trump’s two new favorites:

They’re going to ban windows in all buildings
They’re going to make us all drive only electric cars

Yes, it’s not that hard. That is really what it comes down to.

We can be and are as susceptible to focusing on the things about the messenger and the message we like, and ignoring those that we don’t, as anyone else.

Bigotry and stupidity. They want to persecute and oppress people for being female or the “wrong” religion and are too stupid to realize that they are among the first who will be targeted by the white nationalists they helped put into power.

Anti-Hispanic? Or Anti-Mexican National trying to immigrate?

He’s a known racist, he hates anyone who isn’t white. “Immigration” is just a euphemism for getting rid of anyone not white.

I build houses, though I have semi-retired, and the Hispanic concrete guy that I have used over 30 years is extremely anti immigration for those that came illegally.

Long has there been speculation that eventually the conservative nature of Hispanics would benefit the Republican party. Apparently time has come today.

Time has come today
Young hearts can go their way
Can’t put it off another day
I don’t care what others say
They say we don’t listen anyway
Time has come today

If the Republicans were to ditch the racism and immigration talk and full-out attack the Ds on identity politics (whether real or contrived,) talking against abortion, feminism, LGBT as much as possible, they might capture an outright Hispanic majority the next time.

Yep. AIUI, Fauci paid chickens to pretend to have bird flu, therefore vote Trump

If you’re socially conservative and devoutly catholic like most Hispanic voters, then you are opposed to abortion and any kind of sexual activity other than missionary-position heterosexual intercourse without birth control of any kind in the confines of a marriage, and support for LGBTQ+
rights is not something you can brook. All of which means the Democratic party’s “big tent” inclusiveness is going to be too permissive/inclusive for your tastes.

sure, sure, you’re just talking here right? And another possibility is God changed all the votes because he wanted Trump to win, and I have it on good authority that God has definitely committed miracles in the past, so who knows.

Remember him saying that he’d deport all of the (legal) Haitian immigrants?

…then they would’t be Republicans any more.

Yeah; racism is one of their core values, they aren’t going to walk away from it in our lifetimes if ever.

Anti-Hispanic.

Sadly, the overwhelming amount of violent crime in our major cities is committed by blacks and hispanics-a tough subject-must be discussed. - Donald Trump

I’m pointing out that we know Trump tried to commit voter fraud once because he was recorded doing so.

I’m suggesting it’s possible Trump may have tried to commit voter fraud on other occasions when he wasn’t being recorded.

The Democrats saw that the U.S. in the not-too-distant future would a majority minority country, so it’s understandable that they assumed demographics were destiny and that those demographics would be in their favor. What they failed to consider, however, was a) that many people of color, especially Hispanics and Asians, would be become more conservative as they became more established in this country and b) that the Republicans would tweak their strategies in ways subtle and not-so-subtle to try to garner their votes. And, as several people have mentioned in this thread, many folks immigrating to this country from Latin America have pretty conservative sensibilities, and, well, it’s no surprise that they maintain those conservative sensibilities once they get settled into this country, or that their kids inherit their conservative beliefs.

Also, working class Hispanics, especially those who are pretty well-established in the U.S., share many of the same concerns as other working class people. I have a good friend, a Mexican-American gentleman in the Midwest, who is actually willing to acknowledge that Trump is a flaming assclown. But, he’s also spent most of his life working on a factory floor, and voted for Trump anyway, because he felt that the orange one would be tough on China.

I’ve gone through the reasons why many times over many years. And I have tried to explain to the board this would happen. I’m actually surprised it was only 45%.

The 20% black male vote for Trump was surprising to me, I did not think it would be that high.
