Maybe it’s because they thought VP Vance would let them get strays from the pound for free for dinner.
No, I’m not serious but that would make as much sense as a lot of the reasons I see.
It’s impossible to know exactly how much it affected how people voted, but apparently there was a lot of misinformation / disinformation out there that was in Spanish and apparently directed at Hispanic voters. I heard NPR talk to one Hispanic woman who seemed to genuinely believe Harris was a socialist who was going to turn the US into another Venezuela, which is why she was voting for Trump. I know the views of one individual voter doesn’t prove an overall trend, but it serves to illustrate the sort of misinformation that was out there.
Also, many of the voters who are categorized as Hispanic are people who have lived in the US for decades and are pretty well assimilated into American society. And the more assimilated they become, the more they tend to just vote the same way Americans in general vote, rather then the way one would expect the Hispanic demographic to traditionally vote. And among that group there seemed to be a lot of rationalization along the lines of “Yeah, I crossed the Rio Grande 30 years ago, but that was different. These migrants who are coming here today are doing it the wrong way and need to be stopped.”
The most frustrating thing about this topic is that it always sounds like the people discussing it think that the Spanish and Mexican history in what is now America never happened and there was nobody but natives and Easterners living in the territories after the Mexican War. Like everything and everyone from say 1598 to 1970 never existed.
I also think this is the reason why.
I’ve tried to explain the mindset. They don’t see themselves as black in the way the US does, and they don’t understand US culture. They think they are the next Irish or Italians. They think its about hard work or whatever and just don’t understand that it is racial. It’s all about the one drop thing, if they have to ask where are you from then you are not white.
They also do not understand that they will be deported on accent alone. The MAGA goal is to subjugate the descendants of US slavery. We have a complicated history with them that new black immigrants do not have. The goal is to make us slaves again, and as I said it will be done through the prison system.
They will just get deported, but they don’t understand.
I agree with this. It’s called New Mexico for a reason, people have always flowed back and forth.
No, they are trying to assimilate into US white culture, aka white supremacy. That means shitting on people with any obvious African descent. To be fair in the countries they are coming from most of them would be classed as white and do the same thing as I have explained before.
They are not dupes; they knew exactly whom and what they were voting for.
They just do not understand the nuances of US racial relations, so they do not understand that they would be the ones getting deported.
I’ve tried to explain this over and over. Even African immigrants don’t understand it, they see themselves as not black. They are in for a rude awakening, and I’m done with them.
Suggesting this high unlikelihood event (deportation of U.S. citizens due to an accent) IMHO risks discrediting the struggle against authoritarianism.
P.S. The ICE employees, who will execute the workplace raids, often are Latino and have an accent.
I guess the “they’re all racist and stupid and too stupid to understand how racist they are” hypothesis is one way of looking at it. Of course, that leaves the question of just what one is supposed to do about it in future campaigns, and it REALLY fails to explain how these groups apparently became so stupid and racist since 2020 when they voted mostly for Biden and overwhelmingly for Obama before that.
Maybe this is a more data-fitting hypothesis:
-Most minority groups, especially the kind who move to America because they find the lack of freedom and economic opportunity in their homeland to be undesirable, don’t conceive of life as primarily an eternal racial struggle that overrides all other concerns
-Many voters, even those who might agree more with Democrats than Republicans about identity issues, do not make identity issues their first priority when deciding who to vote for
-Democrats have been telling people to “vote their economic interests” for decades
-Many voters perceived that the Biden/Harris administration was largely responsible for spiraling inflation. The fact is that they were continuing a policy of money-printing during Covid that originated with Trump and the subsequent measures to bring inflation under control have largely worked, arresting inflation at 2% in 2024. But the message on this didn’t get through.
-Blaming people’s lack of understanding of the economic situation entirely on “Fox News” or “Republican propaganda” is a non-starter. The Harris campaign chose to use “fighting price gouging in grocery stores” as the main theme of its commercials. They never even considered trying to educate people about how successful their economic policies had been - because 1) they are blinded by the typical patronizing racism of the over-educted elites that make up the campaign staff and assumed from the get-go that their target voters could not handle being presented with a single number or graph and 2) they fell into typical Democratic strategist magic-wand thinking, where they could simultaneously run against the economy as it exists while also saying everything Biden did was correct and Harris disagreed with none of it, and their solution to the contradiction there was to yell “you’re not allowed to notice that.”
-In any case, 30 year old Latinos are not “watching Fox News” or subscribing to Groyper social media accounts. That simply isn’t what this is about. It’s about people voting on economics and the Democratic message on economics being hopelessly confused to the point that they actually made people’s largely inaccurate blaming of Biden/Harris for alleged poor economic conditions worse than if they had said nothing at all.
-To a lesser extent, it’s about things like Bernie Sanders and the people to his left having some sort of Castro-induced Tourette’s syndrome where they cannot speak to an audience of Cubans in Florida or Puerto Ricans in New York about any issue whatsoever without compulsively adding a rant about how every Cuban-American was an illiterate slaveowner who got what they deserved from the Communists. It’s about every Democrat who tries to discuss America as a land of opportunity for immigrants from around the world immediately being shouted at about “stealing indigenous land” and “late capitalism” by people who go to $80,000/yr liberal arts colleges. It’s about issues of crime, NIMBYism, and social decay in cities largely falling on the shoulders of poor, minority, and immigrant communities while the party elite is insulated in their nicer neighborhoods from the consequences of their luxury beliefs. All of that shit needs to stop yesterday if the Democrats expect to win a federal election ever again, because it repulses the actual persuadable voters they need (unlike things that don’t really matter i.e. trans bathroom crap that only a small group of people who are diehard Republicans anyway care about).
Except it already happens, Trump will just scale it up. And they are already talking about the mass revocation of citizenship.
This isn’t about immigration, it’s about race war. Citizenship is beside the point.
Well in fairness, why not?
What I mean is, the thing about Hispanics being the next Irish is not that it isn’t possible some day, just that it’s sad to see another demographic that instead of deciding we shouldn’t punch down decides it’s ok as long as they are on team punch.
It’s not going to happen in the near future anyway. A lot of trump’s platform is about demonizing Latinos, and it’s (also) sad that people can be naive about this, and tell themselves “Well he doesn’t mean hard-working people like me and my family; he’ll probably give us citizenship, because we voted for him”
Because even ignoring the injustice of it, it’s not their choice to make. They are ignoring that they don’t have the power to make themselves “the next Irish or Italians” any more than the actual Irish and Italians themselves did. That’s entirely in the hands of other people; people who have made their frothing hatred clear.
So this is really a Biden administration policy I am supposed to oppose?
In the rare cases where there was significant fraud involved in naturalization, they should lose their U.S. citizenship and, if their country of origin will take them, be deported.
Latinos make up 30 percent of ICE agents and nearly 50 percent of Border Patrol agents. So they are not going to deport citizens because of an accent. They are going to deport a lot of undocumented workers who I think it is in the U.S. national interest to amnesty. But I suspect non-white Trump voters have a pretty accurate idea of the extent of racism in the U.S., maybe more accurate than some progressives.
Right, all the info gathered from voters said it was inflation, and perhaps inflation hits Hispanics particularly hard.
I am sure xenophobia and misogyny were there, but it was inflation.
But remember folks- trump cant "fix’ inflation. In fact no one can- the best they can do it try to moderate it some to lessen it. And yes, the 2020 inflation- the highest was “trumps fault” (if anyone). But inflation is not easy to understand- I mean i understand it a little, but some leading Economists are sometimes stumped.
And trump did what Right Wing Populists do- he lied to get elected. Just like he did in 2016. In 2020 voters remembered those lies, and voted him out. By 2024 the memory was dim, but not the high price of eggs.
No vote stealing.
There was voter suppression and misinformation, which is unethical and pushed the numbers some, but no one “stole” the election- same with 2020.
Cite? About Sanders. Sanders praised Castro- to some extent.
And they will deport some percentage of that 30 and 50 percent of latinos. Namely those that don’t look white and have an accent.
It’s a race war; it’s not me saying it. Maga is saying it, and they are in charge now. The secretary of defense is going to be a white supremacist with known white power tattoos.
No, trump doesn’t keep his election promises. Likely he might clear out the camps of "illegals’ caught and awaiting hearings, so a million or so- easy targets, not legal right to be here - before the hearing anyway.
Maybe the Haitians, but I think that will need to support of Congress.
Are you declaring a fact?
It’s not about Trump anymore. He’s a puppet now. He wanted the presidency for his own reasons. He doesn’t care about governing.
His henchmen in his cabinet are in charge now and will do whatever they want. Namely project 2025.
They’ll follow orders either because they are too dumb to see the writing on the wall or just desperate to hold off their own persecution as long as possible. But we know from history what happens to people who try to placate fascists like that.
Not enough to change any outcome. Remember trumps accusations and the endless investigations, recounting and lawsuits? They found a few. iirc more GOP fraud than Dem, but mostly mistakes.
