I’m old and have enough money. I have managed to obtain garments that are practical and comfortable and meet all my social obligations. I have a lovely long contra skirt with deep pockets (two zippered) that can hold more than most small purses. And it fits well and swirls nicely. The swirling is for me. That the style matches expectations is for others.
True. But turning it into a general “women do this” or “this is what dancing is” is what I’m objecting to.
No, but I don’t wear them when I’m going to see other people, either.
See that could be a thing I might do!
Kind of a spoof on the skeevy criminal who is not of the US and has extremely poor taste. Probably carries his money in a "roll.’ May or may not be concealing a firearm. Probably has an eggplant wrapped in foil somewhere about his person.
Plus, I could do the “running man” “dance” from the seventies to pretty much anything. Pop a terrycloth headband on to keep the sweat from pouring into one’s eyes.
Sounds like a winner to me!
A dance for any taste!
My niece when she was around 3 or 4 only wanted to dress like her older brother. She wore almost exclusively boys’ clothes for a couple of years. That changed, but she was never a frilly ruffley girlie girl.
Yeah, I interact with a large number of immigrants, sometimes. Many of the male immigrants, regardless of nationality, enjoy dancing. Many of them are also into fashion. “Peacocking” is actually a common male behavior in nature. Think of cocks and their bird songs, mating dances, and bright feathers. Dudes not into dancing or whatever is a modern middle-class, Middle America, and middle age thing.
Anybody who has ever walked into a dance studio can tell you that more girls than boys want to learn how to dance. And then, of the boys who DO want to learn, there is a subset who are societally or parentally discouraged from doing so. I remember a male friend in high school who whispered to me passing in the hall that he was “back in class” like it was a shameful secret. I didn’t need to be told not to repeat that he was in ballet again.
Which is weird, because I promise you he was having more sex, with more perfectly gorgeous girls, than any other guy in the school. Spending hours every week dancing ballet with girls will tend to create those opportunities. But, you know, ignorant society.
He also didn’t bounce out onto the floor at school dances, even though I knew he wanted to. He would have been teased and humiliated by the other guys if they’d realized how good he was.
It’s the same reason that men stopped enjoying playing basketball. At a certain point in recent history, a lot of them realized that they’re not nearly as good as they thought, and they soured on the sport. But there are still a lot of men playing.
