Why do people put syrup on their french toast?

maybe I’m weird but I put ketchup on my french toast…always thought syrup went on pancakes not egg dipped bread

I’m as confused as a baby in a topless bar

French toast falls into the catagory of food known as “maple syrup delivery systems” along with pancakes and waffles. What you do to get the syrup to your mouth isn’t particularly important.
You must use real maple syrup.

Why? Because it just doesn’t taste as good with mustard.

BTW, some people (like in my household when I was a kid), put a little sugar in the egg mixture too, so it was little sweet to start with.

If anybody can get the search function on this board to work, many moons ago, there was a prolonged debate about what belongs on top of french toast. I think the thread was called “French Toast Toppings” and was over in MPSIMS. I think it was the Canadians and Brits who were most likely to use ketchup.

To me Ketchup is syrup. Tomato syrup. I put it on my pancakes and my french toast, but would actually rather have something involving salt and fat rather than sugar and starch. What I can’t understand is people putting syrup (i.e. ketchup) on everything.

Funny you should mention that…

because there isn’t a man around to put syrup on?

I really try to be good but it just isn’t in my nature!

KETCHUP??? ON FRENCH TOAST??? BLEAAAHH!!!

Of course, when I make french toast, the batter has vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg in it… sorry but that is sort of like putting ketchup on a blueberry muffin or something. GROSS.

Uh, 'cause it tastes good?
Tuba, if you really want to make em good, put some cinnamon and vanilla extract in. Yummers. ooh, almost forgot the Bailey’s. Or Gran Marnier. Bailey’s is better, tho.

I have never heard of anyone putting ketchup on their french toast. All I can say to that is eeeeewwww!!

I put a little vanilla extract in the egg mixture to make it a bit sweeter. And I never, ever put syrup on it either (I can’t stand soggy bread). The only things I like on my french toast are powdered (confectioners) sugar or cinnamon sugar.

Okay, now y’all have made me hungry!!! I will be making French Toast tonight for dinner and eating with syrup in honor of SDMB. Of course, this will be after we go out house-hunting! Hooray!

Maple syrup time in Michigan! Sap is starting to run!

Damn, PCW, I sure wish I’d met you when I was single!

Because it tastes good. Though I do know people who put salt and pepper on their french toast-they’re also a bunch of weirdos

I like ketchup on scambled eggs. Maybe it’s the eggs and ketchup you like?

I put maple syrup on my French toast because it would taste funny if I put garlic on it.

Now, now…it depends on how you structure you French toast. O’course the French would probably writhe over dubbing it “French” anyway, but what the heck.

For those who like great honkin’ globs of sweet stuff in the morning, cinnamon in the egg mix and real maple syrup is fine. Makes my eyes roll and tongue coat just thinking about it but it’s an option.

{mid-topic rant: do not douse French toast with powdered sugar before serving! Leave the choice up to the foggy-eyed, morning-hating diner.}

IMO, the best French toast is honest bread and egg/milk coating, served hot as a platform for melted butter (Brummel & Brown will do), a whisper of salt and generous sprinkles of Louisiana hot sauce.

But that’s just me. Sweet stuff at breakfast just makes morning more of an affront.

Veb

so where do y’all stand on the great porridge debate - brown sugar, or salt?

and the stars o’erhead were dancing heel to toe

eeewww

catsup? hot sauce? on frech toast?

Sounds like a bad egg sandwich to me, only the egg surrounds the bread rather that inbetween…'sides I never put catsup or hot sauce on my eggs, only salt and pepper.

Like many I make my french toast with a dab of nutmeg, occasionally vanilla extract, and YES, you have to have syrup on it…

Now, if you serve me eggs benedict with bacon and a bloody mary I am in heaven!

Well, the maple syrup is certainly an option, but yer good old-fashioned whipped cream is still the hands-down favorite, with the added advantage of not staining the sheets . . .

Oh. You’re talking French TOAST? I am just so embarrassed . . .

Neither. Butter and jam. Mmmm…
