Why do people sleep with something covering them in the summer?

This. I feel the tiny air currents in the room, and it makes me itchy.

I think I need the weight - however slight - of the covers. Interestingly, I’ll often stick my feet out from under the bedding, so I’ll be covered from neck to calf.

It’s only in the last 2-3 years that I’ve started occasionally sleeping with no covers at all in the summer (I do wear a nightgown) if it’s warm enough in the bedroonm. I have no idea why I can now sleep without covers.

Back in the days when I rented an apartment in the city and couldn’t afford A/C, on a handful of swelteringly hot & sweaty nights I would sleep naked and spread-eagled on my back on top of the sheets. Short of that, even if it’s just a hot summer night, I tend to sleep better with just a light sheet covering my legs, even if I stick my left leg out. Still always naked, though. No matter how cold it gets I just find it very uncomfortable to have clothes on when I sleep.

This is a constant bone of contention between hubby and I. He doesn’t understand why you’d turn on the air conditioner/otherwise keep it cool in a room and then wrap up. I think it’s just that I’m used to the weight of the blankets and like sleeping in a cool room with something on me to regulate the temperature.

He keeps it sweltering if given his druthers. Drives me nuts.

I’m another poster who is just uncomfortable without something covering me. Although I sometimes wake up without a blanket over me, rarely do I find it hot enough to fall asleep that way.

I never cover my feet when I sleep, however.

Same here–my back itches if it’s not covered. If I’m wearing a t-shirt, I don’t itch, and can nap comfortably without a cover.

Because my house has air conditioning.

Comfort and security for me too. I like the feeling of cool linens, and can’t relax enough to sleep without something covering me.

I need a certain amount of weight on me to fall asleep. When it’s really hot I manage by piling my blankets against my back. I can’t sleep on cotton sheets either - I need flannel or jersey cotton or have to wear pajamas.

Bingo.

In one of his forwards Stephen King wrote something along the lines of “And even though you’re fifty years old and know for a fact there really aren’t monsters under the bed you’ll be damned if you let your arm drop over the side of the bed…”

I may wake up with the sheet on the floor and my nightgown hiked up to my waist, but damned if I’m going to fall asleep that way.

I’ve got to jump on the comfort and security bandwagon as well. I’d rather have the A/C and fan on with a light sheet over me than having it warmer without a sheet. Maybe the sheet DOES keep the boogy man away. All I know is, he hasn’t gotten me yet

HA! I developed the habit because a brother would grab my feet!

I like to think there’s a story behind that.

Some sf stories written in the '30s and '40s posited that people in the future wouldn’t have covers on their beds, because the temperature in the house would be automatically kept at a constant. For most people, it hasn’t worked out that way; at least for me, there seems to be a real psychological comfort from having at least a sheet over me; and I really like being under a comforter in a cool room.

Three reasons for me: comfort. I feel secure with blankets. Also, where I live, even at the height of summer it can get down into the 40sF at night. Not everywhere stays warm and humid and nasty all night (though just about everywhere else I’ve ever lived does) during the summer.

Living in hot places I have always had AC anyway. And I hate the feeling of air blowing over me. So I need at least a sheet and light blanket.

I know there are very good reasons why little babies don’t sleep under covers or with anything else in the crib like that, but they just look so exposed without a blanket over them!

Must have been the roofies.

I love to feel the weight of a comforter when I’m sleeping. I miss sleeping naked on truly hot nights, but I wouldn’t want to traumatize my son.

I have to have the room reasonably cool before I can fall asleep. So I may fall asleep without a cover on, but at some point my body cools off enough that the room temperature is then too cold, and I’ll pull up the cover.

And it’s also a comfort thing, I think. Something about being asleep in bed without at least a sheet covering me leaves me feeling bare and exposed. I can occasionally nap on the sofa without a cover, but if the nap goes a little long I’ll wake up to find that I’ve piled cushions over my body or else have pulled the lap blanket onto myself.

Me too. Specifically, indoor drafts/breezes. They don’t bother me on my head/face and arms — parts of my body that are typically uncovered no matter where I am, and so are accustomed to wind. But I simply cannot fall asleep if there’s a breeze blowing across my bare chest/back/ass — parts of my body that are usually covered. So I can sleep with my head and arms uncovered, but not the rest of my body.

This is the same thing my girlfriend does, only she then adds the extra step of turning on a fan, full blast, and pointing it at the bed.

Why?

“So I can sleep under a blanket.”
It’s summer, woman! It shouldn’t be -13 degrees in the bedroom!!
