Why do people sleep with something covering them in the summer?

I think it’s a comfort thing, just like I prefer to have the ceiling fan on as well. A light sheet or blanket, no matter how hot it seems to be just helps me fall asleep better. It may not be totally covering me, maybe just my feet or pulled around my back with legs exposed, but it helps. I find I don’t get the chills either ie: slight breeze making the hair stand up.

:smack:

I really wasn’t thinking when I typed that, was I.

I’ve never liked nightgowns because I don’t like the bound up/wrapped up feeling around my legs that inevitably happens when I toss and turn all night, but I do wear them when it’s really hot as they’re cooler than shorts and a t-shirt.

And that’s the rest of the story.

I’m slightly embarassed now. :stuck_out_tongue:

I feel like I will be stabbed if I don’t have something over me. (My brother had the same phobia without us having ever talked about it.) How a sheet will help I don’t know.

So yes, I will run the A/C to be able to have a sheet on in the summer.

Has anyone mentioned comfort and security yet?

Nope, but you might just be onto something

dammit.

Why do I read these things, and how do I get a 12 gauge under the pillow?

I feel the same way, which is why even when it’s freezing cold (unless the power’s out or something) I sleep in a t-shirt and underwear and just keep a pair of pajama pants by the bed in case of emergencies. I hate getting all tangled up in a nightgown or pants. I don’t like sharing hotel rooms with people because I have to either wear pants and suffer or slip out of them halfway through the night and risk somebody seeing the cottage cheese on my thighs.

I have a huge wardrobe of nightgowns and pajamas and stuff - I wear them as “loungewear”. I just sleep in free t-shirts.

In my case, it’s a matter of habit. I’m a fairly light sleeper. If I change something in the way I sleep, it’ll be somewhat more difficult for me to sleep for 2-3 nights.

I found that I could make the transition to no covering with less sleep disruption if I just covered my feet with the sheet.

My apartment building has central a/c, and it’s on only for the summer. I’m on the same side of the building as the a/c unit, so its near-white noise is noticeable. But that doesn’t keep me from sleeping. However, when it’s turned off at the end of summer, the relative quiet of what is really just average street noise does disturb my sleep for a few nights.

Partly the draft thing - my shoulders and lower back must be covered for me to be comfortable. And partly to make sure that any nocturnal predators that come upon my nest can’t see me and eat me. At least that’s what the part of my brain that evolved 2 million years ago tells me. And it’s not subject to rational argument.

Security, comfort, and quality sheets feel really nice (and cool) against bare skin.

That and, even if it is sweltering enough to require a fan or A/C in order to get to sleep, the temp in my bedroom usually drops enough overnight that I’d be chilly by morning if I weren’t covered. If the sheet isn’t within reach (and I move a lot, I could kick it away if it’s not actually covering me), I have to wake up in order to grab it and cover myself, and I like sleep too much to want to wake up at 4am to hunt for the covers. I get cold fairly easily to begin with, when my metabolism is low from sleeping for 8 hours it doesn’t take too much to make me a bit cold.

 I like having the bedroom cool and a sheet and maybe a light blanket over me. I sleep better when the room is cool.

(And, no, I’m not VunberBob’s wife!)
