Why do some people (especially, it seems, men) hate cats?

Alright, there has been a lot of guy-bashing in this thread, and it’s not just guys who are insecure and crave an animal that gives them endless enthusiastic adoration. My mother is one classic example. It’s not enough that she loves her little yapdog, she has to go on and on about how she hates cats when nobody’s asking her to have anything to do with any cats.

Me, I like dogs, if they’re well-behaved and owned by someone else. As for cats… I thought it would be a good idea to get one with my wife 13 years ago. Then it turns out I’m allergic, and he wakes up mrowling to be fed at 5AM, and we have to keep these little boxes of shit everywhere in the house, and occasional I get a cold juicy hairball between my toes, and therefore I am completely over cats forever. It has nothing to do with insecurity and everything with not wanting my countertops coated in hair and grains of cat litter.

Meh, so it’s a zombie thread. The question is still relevant.

Personally I don’t hate cats, I just don’t like them and have little tolerance for them.

I don’t like house pets, I don’t like cats or dogs in the house. Whenever i go into a house that has animals live in there, I can smell it. I assume the owners can’t because they’re totally accustomed to it.

The only animals in my house are the axolotl and the budgie.

My dogs live in the back yard. They have shelter and plenty of places to crap. The house is mine.

I don’t get people who have cats in the house, going straight from the litter box to walking on the kitchen bench where you want to make a sandwich. yuck. And having them sleep in your bed? double yuck.

I mostly hate cats because I hate how they make it difficult for me to breathe. Stupid allergies.

This may have already been posted, but it sums this topic up:

My mother always said she hated cats, so when I was growing up we always had dogs. After leaving home, the first thing I did was adopt 2 cats. That was 49 years ago, and as each cat passed away, I always adopted a new one. But every time my parents visited me, they always got along withe the cats. My mother always said those two were an exception. And over the decades, every single cat I had was an exception. Fast forward to 1995, when I had to relocate back here to help take care of her. Now she was no longer visiting, she was cohabiting with cats. It didn’t take long for her to bond with them and actually love them; and when they passed away, she bonded with and loved the two new ones.

One day she said “I always thought all cats were the same, like squirrels.”
To which I answered, “What makes you think all squirrels are the same?”

To her dying day, she still said these two cats were “exceptions.

My partner lives next door to me, and has two big dogs. The cats never visit them, but the dogs visit us. It took the cats a long time to stop hissing at them, but they’ve stopped, and reluctantly tolerate them. I have even caught the cats grooming the dogs several times.

And I also love dogs. When my partner’s out of town I take care of his, and even play and sleep with them. No problem.

How do you know? Can you say for certain that yoyo isn’t a cat?

Heh… I was reading this thread, ran across a post and thought “Man, this guy really nailed down the way I think about cats. I should quote his post.”

Then I saw it was my own post from 9 years ago.

Heh.

I once read a thread with a question. I had reply in my head and I was going to mention A, B, and C. Then I found my reply I had typed up years ago. It was so alike to what I had recreated it was scary. Not just the facts but down to the word choice and sentence structure level. And I am not sure whether that is a good thing or a bad thing.

So, I just quoted myself from the past and noted in the reply “that’s what I came here to say”.

I stand by every word!

Double post. Stupid cats!

PseudoTritonRuberRuber got banned? When did that happen? And for what?

ETA: surely not for hating cats!

I’m a woman and I hate cats. I don’t understand why anyone would want such a gross thing slinking around the house.

For what it’s worth, I really like just about all other animals- even wild felines like ocelots and servals and tigers, etc. It’s only house cats, feral or otherwise, that cause a visceral reaction in me and I fantasize about poisoning the ones that I see slinking around the neighborhood.

I love cats, but I can tell you why my mother hates them.
“Because they are evil.”

Kittens are cute, but cats (IMHO) are sneaky and smelly. I can smell a litter box before I enter someone’s house. They always have their butthole in the air and they nip at me (clearly, they can sense my apprehension). The sound of them eating soft food makes me want to vomit too. They shed, jump on heads and other stuff, and sneak around. I just can’t take it. I’m nice to other peple’s cats, by kindly ignoring them  My daughter is allergic as well, to boot.

My tuppence on the subject is posted here. Thanks for pointing me to this thread, Sailboat. To summarize, there may be a historical reason why cat hating is considered manly in Anglo-Saxon and North American cultures. But we all know that real men love cats, right?

Sigh. Repeats to self: Must not feed the troll, must not feed the troll, must not feed the troll…:smack:

I hate cats they are disgusting. I have lived with several in my life, even befriended them, I like the particular cat sometimes, but really just don’t like them as pets.

  1. I feel like if I were small enough the cat would torture me to death.
2.They don’t show care and affection like a dog, they can look cute sometimes but its not the same.
  2. Property destruction
4.Stinking box in the house, who wants excrement sitting in their house at all times? I don’t understand cat lovers.
  3. Their dander and fur is gross, the protein from their saliva becomes airborne and sticks to everything. I can smell people in a non cat public place who own cats sometimes.
  4. The smell of their urine if they choose to relieve themselves on anything other than the litter is particularly foul.
7.they walk around in the nasty litter box and then want to walk on counters and food areas not to mention bed etc…

THEY ARE NASTY ANIMALS AND IT IS UNSANITARY TO KEEP THEM IN A HOME.

p.s. even if you keep them as clean as possible, I have known very few cat owners who properly groom and clean up after their cat. nasty shit boxes

Haha I do this too! I often bury my nose in my cat’s fur and take a big whiff - almost daring them to smell bad. But they never do smell bad. Despite the fact they only clean themselves via saliva. :confused

To me, the smell of wet dog is more offensive.

Guys, if you think cat boxes are smelly, please upgrade to Crystal Litter. The stuff lasts forever, is extremely lightweight, low dust, and absorbs liquids like crazy. Since it desiccates the waste so quickly and thoroughly, there is almost no odor. When we were selling our house (FSBO, no realtor to show them around) buyers were constantly surprised we had cats locked in the basement, since there was no smell.
