What is it about weddings that brings out the worst in people? I hear about parents/grandparents trying to exert inappropriate levels of control over the planning, bridezillas who have to have everything her way, and epic levels of hurt over who gets invited to the wedding and who gets to be a member of the wedding party. Even with my my impending tiny wedding, various people were extremely upset that they were not on the guest list (never mind that we only invited our parents, the friend who introduced us, and the four people who were letting us use their space for the wedding). We’ve even had people tell us what our wedding is supposed to mean and who the wedding celebration is supposed to be for. It’s more than a little weird.
To me, a wedding is a special day, sure. But it’s just one day, and life and relationships are built over the long term. Why do so many people pin so much importance on the wedding itself?
