Why do women have orgasms?

Huh, news to me. (Hehe)

Why do women have orgasms?

WHO CARES?

ok if sperm causes an orgasim the nhow cum the girl is suppose to cum b4 the guy? thats how it is in pornos

and whats with fingering? there no jizz in your fingertips

Um … where in this thread did anyone say that sperm/ejaculation triggers the female orgasm?

(Although I will admit that there was this one woman I dated, whom I could “drive” to orgasm during intercourse with her by climaxing, or even pretending to climax. [Yes, men can fake their orgasms.] It had to do with the intensity of my work-out, as it were, not the actual presence of semen, though.)

Because a Law was enacted in 1914 enabling equal rights for women. They had a parade. But some were still not satisfied with the outcome.

I think the association of the female orgasm with cervical “dipping” is tenuous at best. All we have to go on is one videotape, made for a sensationalized pop science TV program. It’s anecdotal at best. It could even have been staged. I’m not saying it was, just that this evidence is not scientific.

The “dipping” action could just as easily occured due to heavy breathing or vocalizations. I mean, the woman is having an orgasm! (I’ve been in a position to see just how much a contraction of the diaphragm can displace a cervix… and the rest of the bits down there.)

The hypotheses that orgasms mechanically (hydraulically?) facilitate fertilization has no real evidence to support it. Even the study that links pregnancy rates with orgasms doesn’t necessarily indicate any physical cause - it could just be that women whose partners give them more orgasms have more sex and expose their eggs to more semen.

I think there are important things to consider that give equal or greater weight to the behavioral hypothesis:

[li] Humans are one of the few species that engage in deliberate pursuits other than eating and mating. This gives a lot of weight to the reward hypothesis.[/li]
[li] It could just be a byproduct of intelligence. Behaviorists have documented that only the most intelligent species engage in recreational sex. Dolphins are especially randy beasts. A logical extension of this would be that we have more fun at it than coyotes and tortoises. (Has anyone checked to see if female dolphins have orgasms?)[/li]
[li] It could also have evolved as a way to help bond mated pairs. I don’t think I need to explain to anyone the attachment you feel to someone with whom you’ve just had great sex.[/li]
Personally, I don’t care why, as long as I get to dish out a few… per day.

Oh, and since the OP, a rather interesting paper was published in the BMJ. And it won the 2000 Ig Nobel prize for medicine!

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Male and Female Genitals During Coitus and Female Sexual Arousal.

I’m surprised no one’s mentioned oxytocin yet…it’s the hormone that causes uterine contractions, not only during orgasm but also during childbirth & breast-feeding. In childbirth, it serves the obvious function of squeezing the baby out, & during breast-feeding, the contractions assist the uterus in returning to its pre-pregnancy size. I can’t think what physical function is served by the uterine contractions of orgasm, but oxytocin is called the “bonding hormone” & its release triggers feelings of closeness…I gotta do some research on this, but it somehow makes us feel connected to whatever we’re close to at the time. I feel as though this is connected to why women like to snuggle after sex & guys don’t.

Gee… is that available in pill form?

To the best of my knowledge, “Ich bin ein Berliner” is not a correct translation of “I am a Berliner”, because “Berliner” (German) doesn’t mean “Berliner” (English). However, it doesn’t necessarily mean a pastry, either. To a German ear, what he said translates most precisely as, “I am a Berlinish”, which is not quite grammatical, but its meaning is plain enough.

I have no idea how the above response got posted to this thread.

In case anyone else is sharing John W. Kennedy’s confusion, he meant to post his reponse (and did repost it) in this thread.
