Alcohol
Why do you drink it?, social thing?, for the affect?, to look tuff?
Personally I drink to get drunk, what about you?
Cheers

Welcome to the SDMB CorBlimeyGuvnor - I feel like I know you already!
Hopefully a friendly moderator will be along in a moment to move this one to IMHO - the proper place for polls.
Me, I drink alcoholic beverages because I like the taste and a very small amount of alcohol makes me feel mellow and happy (a larger amount will tend to make me vomit on the carpet, or merely ‘feel all funny’, so I tend to keep it in moderation.
Thank you for your kind welcome, let us hope that said friendly moderator realises I am a complete idiot and does the move.
Nice to meet somebody of a sensible nature.
WHELKS!
Whelk detection unit.
Welcome CorBlimeyGuvnor.
I usually drink whenever I feel in the mood to socialise a bit or meet new people, to help me forget about something that’s been bothering me… and for the taste, of course. And as an added bonus I get good night’s sleep.
Social Drinker but often to excess.
Also drink to try out new and interesting beers.
Social drinker.
That’s pretty much all the socialising I, and all my mates, do, actually.
Often to excess too.
well, i start off as a light drinker, then move to social drinker
followed by moderate drinker
heavy drinker
and finally, on bad nights, downright stupid drinker
its gotten to the point where i use a new term for measuring distances to travel. Eg, from mates house to home is:
2 min drive
6 min run
10 min walk
25 min drunken stumble
time is tripled if u run outta drinks on the way, and have to go bak for more.
Btw, wheres that moderator gone?
Sounds very very similar to my experiences, but miss out the social bit!
Cheers
Off to IMHO.

I don’t drink often. I get truly blitzed no more than two or three times a year. (Chalk one up for yesterday, by the way;) ) It’s not that I don’t enjoy the taste, there are some very tasty drinks out there. But I have a tendency to feel ill before I feel drunk. If I’m good and determined, I can continue to drink through the initial discomfort, and then I’m all smiles until the moment I decide I need to throw up. But I usually find I can have just as good a time without it, and I never have to worry about getting home.
I tend toward the social drinking side. Most of my drinking is usually out at a bar with friends. Probably about every 3-4 months I will drink at home, just for relaxation. I got messed-up drunk a couple times in the last few years, but not very often.
Not fun. I don’t like being drunk. I have a control “issue” I guess, and the idea of not knowing what I was doing or being out of control actually frightens me. Most of the time, I prefer to get just nice and toasty, so I think a little slower, or walk a little crooked, but not so far I would actually fall down or vomit.
Depends. I drink for lots of reasons. I enjoy a good wine to compliment a meal. I enjoy a cocktail with friends to socialize. I enjoy a great beer just for the taste alone. Sometimes I enjoy getting shitfaced just for the fun of getting shitfaced. It kind of depends on my mood.
It’s a great social facilitator. I’ve noticed that gatherings of people other than friends (eg family, co-workers) tend to be immeasurably more enjoyable for everyone if there is a bit of alcohol available. It loosens everyone up.
Of course, there is a threshold to be reached - once someone gets past the “friendly and outgoing drunk” to “boorish asshole drunk” then it is more of a social inhibitor.
I agree with most when they say there are lots of different reasons. I’ll have a few drinks with colleagues after work sometimes. Regularly, weekends will be spent socialising (read: getting hammered) with friends. And sometimes I’ll ahve a drink or two at home just for the sake of it.
I’ve gotta agree with this too…
I find that after a few beers, I’m a REALLY good singer.
seriously though, sometimes for the following reasons:
Well, the only time I’ve really done the drinking thing much was the month when I was in Spain. There, it was more of a social thing, it made me feel good, and I was experimenting while it was legal.
Back in my younger days, I was pretty good with a gun. It got so that every pissant prairie punk who thought he could shoot a gun would ride into town to try out the Waco Kid. I must’ve killed more men than Cecil B Demille. Got pretty gritty. I started to hear the word draw in my sleep. Then one day, I was just walking down the street, and I heard a voice behind me say, “Reach for it Mister!” I spun around and there I was face to face with a six-year-old kid. Well I just threw my guns down and walked away…little bastard shot me in the ass!! So I limped to the nearest saloon, crawled into a whiskey bottle, and I’ve been there ever since.
[sub]Well, somebody had to do it…[/sub]
