Everybody hated him because as the original drummer for Steely Dan, he held back the band for years. He’s arrogant and has incredible halitosis and body odor.
That meeting came in at # 8.
You raise a 6 year dead thread for that comment. Gah!
Yup. Blah blah blah, preacher character, blah blah blah, gay Elmer Fudd, blah blah blah. There is no actual improvisation.
Pretty much first thing I thought when Robin Williams came up in the thread.
Since it’s aliiiiiiive…
My vague and possibly inaccurate recollection of what happened with his talk show was that Chase pitched a sketch show to the network (sketch work being his strongest suit) but everyone was launching talk shows in the post-Carson vacuum (see also: Arsenio Hall) and he was told “You can do a talk show or you can go pound sand”. I watched Chase’s show and it was paaaaaaaainfully obvious that he didn’t want to be there and he was hating every minute of it. Cancelling the show was an act of mercy.
Sadly, his Doritos ads also got cancelled; in fact Doritos did a parody ad in which they cancel Chase’s commercial halfway through, which I thought rather clever.
Also, Gilbert Gottfried ain’t the AFLAC duck anymore since his little Japanese tsunami joke and Robin Williams is only funny when working with a director willing to keep him on a tight leash.
I was 25 when SNL debuted. My impressions at the time:
During that first season, Chase was almost unbelievably funny, with seemingly no effort, from the get-go. The rest of the cast took a little time to get their bearings/momentum/niche, whatever you want to call it, but after those first few weeks Chevy no longer stood out as the “star” or “funniest” player, in my view. He was no less hilarious, but now had at least three colleagues who were equally funny.
As I remember it, very shortly after he left SNL he did a “Chevy Chase Special” on NBC. I only saw it that one time, but my recollection is that he had me rolling on the floor laughing my ass off scaring the cat. Next up: Big Screen.
As it turned out, that was the last time he ever had whatever the magic had been. The movie with Goldie Hawn was a dud, and literally nothing he’s done since has made me even grin.
I don’t dislike the guy, although in hindsight I do think he had a smug arrogance that his early brilliance didn’t quite disguise. But by the late 70’s I found him shockingly unfunny, with a strange air of desperation about him.
That’s my 2¢
.
Most standup comics get hit with this accusation; except for someone like Demitri Martin, whose joke-writing skill is central to his appeal, most comedians are in fact just repeating jokes they’ve heard elsewhere.
A joke doesn’t belong to the guy who wrote it, and it doesn’t belong to the guy most famous for telling it. A joke belongs to whoever is telling it right now, the best. Frequently, that is Robin Williams.
You don’t have to like me, but I don’t revive useless threads to correct someone’s spelling. Roll your eyes!
Chevy was very good in the original SNL. It was a magical coincidence of great talent coming together.
Caddie shack was good for lots of reasons. Chevy could not fuck it up. I have not liked any of his movies. So I am not a fan.
Robin Williams was a super comedian years ago. He has made some good movies… He has had a far better career than Chevy. No comparison there.
If you want to give Robin Williams a second chance, you should listen to his interview with Marc Maron on Maron’s podcast (“WTF with Marc Maron”) which you can find on iTunes – he comes across as very thoughtful, insightful, well-spoken, and (dare I say it) wise.
Now now. Let’s not be hasty here.
If you’re replying to one of my comments, your post automatically becomes important and meaningful.
Likewise Dennis Miller. It’s a whole lot easier to spit out the esoteric references when you wrote them all down a week in advance and are just repeating the same material from show to show.
I admit I skimmed this thread a bit, since I was busy protecting my brains, but it doesn’t look like anyone mentioned what Kevin Smith had to say about Chevy following some talks they had together about a new Fletch Movie (that didn’t/isn’t happening).
Basically, it sounds like Kevin found the guy extremely arrogant and unfunny. Not unlike his character on Community.
Am I to understand that somehow Chevy Chase’s short lived talk show was actually cancelled in the middle of a taping?
How is that even possible?
I just got the image of a zombie Chevy Chase.
curls up into a fetal position and whimpers" We are all doomed"
I’m younger than Chevy but only by 7 years or about.
As far as what people my age think about Chevy…well, he’s just not funny anymore.
His humor for the most part is dumb. I like smart jokes… shows like “The Big Bang
Theory”, “Two Broke Bitches” etc.
That slapstick BS Chevy does, that made us laff when we were stoned out of our heads on pot or whatever, just doesn’t do it for us now… In other words, he’s not very relevant any more either and his humor is immature to but it mildly. I don’t know who’s funnier, Adam Sandler or Chevy… hmmmmm.
I like “Community” but he sure doesn’t carry that show.
Amy is brilliant and her humor is good… The writing on the show is good but Chevy just ain’t happening these days…and now he is in an pissing match with the producer.
Chevy difficult to deal with, nah, he’s an just an arTIST.
Flippin’ zombie. Never mind.
