Oops NM.
He was outstanding in Awakenings and Insomnia. I think he is much better as a dramatic actor than a comedian.
Interesting thread; Chase is obviously quite a polarizing figure, and those who dislike him really seem to hate him. Some posters have mentioned his “long string of flops,” and I’m just not seeing it. During the 80’s he made Caddyshack, Fletch, Spies Like Us, Three Amigos, and 3 Vacation films. Plus a few duds sprinkled in, but not a bad record there.
His star faded after 1990 or so and he wasn’t getting comic lead roles so much anymore, but that happens in the biz. FWIW, I thought he was hilarious is all the above films as well as on Community. I can understand not caring for him as a performer, but in 7 years I still don’t think we’ve explained the level of sheer disgust that many of his detractors seem to have.
I do not hate Chevy Chase, but I’m not all gun-ho about Maryland in general
I remember in Live from New York, there was a story of Chase coming back to guest host SNL, there was an openly gay cast member (the first, I believe). When he first met the cast he turned to the guy and said, “you’re a fag right?” The cast member said, “uh, yes I am, what can I do for you?” And Chase said, “you can suck my dick.”
Stay classy Chevy.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I hate him because he looks and acts like and is as arrogant as someone I hate in real life.
That’s my take on it – a classic case of “Be careful how you treat the people you meet on the way up, because you’re going to meet them again on the way down”.
I don’t know why people get testy about zombie threads, but whatever.
I can take or leave Chase, though I liked some of his earlier movies. But Robin Williams is wearing thin on me. He can do drama well up to a point as long as long as he avoids the mannerism of “smiling through his pain” while revealing some awful past hurt or truth. Then he just comes across as mawkish and overly sentimental. As for his comic chops, I liked him a lot in my own coke-fueled days, but that’s a long long time ago. I recall seeing him on Whose Line Is It Anyway? and when he was called upon for true on the spot improv, his only defense was dialing up the more manic aspects of his personality. I guess I would characterize it as scream of consciousness delivery. Colin Mochrie and Ryan Stiles wiped the floor with him though I’m sure that was not their aim.
Why does Chevy look so puffy on Community? It doesn’t look like normal weight gain to me. Does he have some medical condition?
Huh. Well, this is timely.
Man, did you read that list? What an asshole! At a press event, he recently made jokes about raping his female costars from Community.
Filter at work blocks Gawker.com (for my protection …)
Can someone please summarize or do a “fair use” posting of an excerpt?
Thanks.
The history of Chevy Chase being a jerk is long and varied, and from what I’ve heard Chevy is hard at work creating new legends of his own dickishness as the old stories become more widely known. I heard a recent story about Chevy unloading on a nervous intern who spilled a small amount of Coca-Cola in front of Chase and SNL creator Lorne Michaels. “Why don’t you just piss in it?” he snarled.
But you don’t even need to hunt down anecdotes of Chevy screaming at interns: between the hundreds of thousands of words that have been written about Saturday Night Live, his weirdly public ongoing spats with actors and writers on Community, and the unbelievably dickish and petty interviews he’s given over the years, there’s plenty of evidence that Chevy Chase is an asshole.
I saw that yesterday. It’s an exhaustive list. Worth bookmarking for off-work reading. Here’s the list of the whos. Read the article for the hows:
Who He Pissed Off: John Belushi, Al Franken, Laraine Newman, Gilda Radner, and basically the whole cast and writing staff of Saturday Night Live
Who He Pissed Off: Johnny Carson
Who He Pissed Off: Lorne Michaels
Who He Pissed Off: Jacqueline Carlin
Who He Pissed Off: Jane Curtin
Who He Pissed Off: Bill Murray
Who He Pissed Off: Terry Sweeney, Robert Downey Jr., Jon Lovitz and the cast of the 1985-1986 season
Who He Pissed Off: The entire television-viewing public.
Who He Pissed Off: Howard Stern
Who He Pissed Off: Will Ferrell and the cast of the 1996-1997 season
Who He Pissed Off: Bill Maher and NYPD Blue creator Stephen Bochco
Who He Pissed Off: Kevin Smith
Who He Pissed Off: Comedian Rob Huebel
Who He Pissed Off: Dan Harmon
Who He Pissed Off: Dino Stamatopoulos and much of the Community cast.
Who He Pissed Off: Yvette Brown, Alison Brie, Megan Ganz and probably most of the show’s female staff
It’s possible that he’s being unfairly maligned but given the sheer volume of grievances it’s more likely that someone just ‘doesn’t play well with others.’
Thanks. I’ll head to Gawker sometime over the weekend.
Some of the comments on that Gawker story also contend that his mother was a nutcase who abused him. Does anyone know anything about this?
That’s an impressive list, and kind of puts Chevy in a new perspective. Shame, really; I like the image of big lovable goof he puts off in Fletch and the You Can Call Me Al video.
Heh heh heh… From that article:
because we’re all jealous of the women that that goofey dude gets as that loser griswald
How about his suggestion to the openly gay SNL cast member that every week they weigh him on the show to see if he has AIDS? God, what a douche.
