Why does Family Guy get so much flak for copying the Simpsons

there are like 10 million family sitcoms but if two of them are animated it’s no good

Was anyone lauding the originality of “Yes, Dear”?

Because you touch yourself at night.
That’s a Family Guy reference, btw, if anyone mistakenly thought I was attacking the OP or something

I’ve heard a lot of criticism of Family Guy and Seth MacFarlane in general but I’ve never actually heard anyone criticize the show for copying Simpsons. Are you sure it gets a lot of flak for it?

I have, but that was easily ten years ago.

This was addressed on last night’s show. Brian and Stewie were answering “viewer mail”. One writer asked what the show was based on and they answered that the show was based on “The Simpsons”. But, they were just kidding, as they then showed that “Family Guy” was actually based on a British version of the show.

Because Simpsons is the holy grail of animated shows nowadays so the purists are defensive about it when it comes to other adult animated shows.

Nothing wrong with it really, but it is what it is. Besides, how many other shows have been successful that are like the Simpsons?

There has been lots of talk about it being a ripoff, especially early on. The Simpsons referenced it at least twice. First in a Treehouse of Horror where Homer clones himself and one resembles Peter. Later, with Sideshow Bob in Italy, they show Peter as an example of “plagiarismo” (sic) and Stan Smith as “plagiarismo di plagiarismo.” And of course South Park devoted a 2-part episode to it.

Initially, because it was about a family with an idiot dad. Now I enjoy both shows, but it seems like every other episode of FG there is a joke (or plotline) that is uncomfortable similar to another show’s joke, especially the Simpsons. It doesn’t reduce my enjoyment, but it makes me want to scream “REALLY!?” sometimes.

That’s because, as South Park has pointed out in the past, The Simpsons has already done pretty much everything. Any episode at all of any sitcom, you could claim with some fairness “The Simpsons have done it”.

I haven’t seen Homer break up a diamond smuggling ring in Mexico yet (and they have to fly there on the back of a pterodactyl, or it doesn’t count).

Mike Tyson talking to to Seth MacFarlane during a Comedy Central Roast:

“While I was in prison, I read ‘The Iliad,’ and it helped me a lot. So Seth, I just want you to know that you’re not the only person stealing ideas from Homer!”

Family Guy doesn’t really rip off The Simpsons so much as it endlessly rips off itself. There are like five jokes in the whole show, repeated ad nauseum and in different orders to convince you that you’re watching a new episode.

 He had a good writer. Wonder if they were able to explain to Mike why it was funny.

Actually it was “so you see, Seth, both of us succeeded by taking from Homer”. Best line of the entire Charlie Sheen roast!

The lead character is a stupid, happily oblivious, suburban fat guy married to a cuter, mostly sensible, wife. Their family has three kids (one an infant) and a dog.

Which show does that describe?
Which show came first Simpsons or Family Guy?

The majority of sitcoms in the 90s?

Does The Simpsons have a talking dog?

weell… homer says in one episode that Santa’s helper can say “I love you”, does that count?

All I know is that this exact gag was ripped from when Homer was trying to eat chips in Two Dozen and One Greyhounds.

Does Maggie talk, and endlessly plot to kill Marge?
