I’m not a bit Kristin Stewart fan and I’ve never seen any of the Twilight movies, but she’s cute and she’s on TV a lot. Tonight, she was on The People’s Choice Awards, several times, including receiving a couple of awards. Every time she is on screen, she just looks so uncomfortable in her own skin, almost as if she hates that anyone is looking at her or paying attention to her. This seems like an odd attitude for a TV/movie star. Does she suffer from some sort of phobia or other disorder?
Though I can’t speak for her or through her, she’s probably thinking: Oh, Gawd, all these people are looking at my digital self on their TV screen. And all those people are staring at my body. And they all think ‘she looks so uncomfortable in her own skin’. One of them is probably posting a thread about this right now.
She’s one who loves the work, but hates the trappings that go along with it. She loves acting, but putting herself out there to do promotion and things like the, ugh, People’s Choice Awards, make her uncomfortable. People sneer at her, because all that comes with the territory and it’s what she signed up for, and god knows the kind of money she makes how dare she complain yadda yadda, but I can see her point. If you’re doing a job you love, but then you have to put up with all this other crap, it kinda sucks. And come on, it’s crap. Necessary crap, but still crap. Answering the same questions a million times, getting shit for not being all perky and smiley every second, having people talk about your love life, treating you like a piece of meat, when all you want to do is the actual work of acting.
A lot of people feel just like she does, they love the work but hate the promotional/publicity side of it. Most people are just better at hiding it than she is.
I don’t care much for the Twilight movies, but I like Kristin Stewart. She’s a good actress when she’s not playing Bella (it’s the Twilight character who’s mopey and stupid, not Kristin), and it’ll be nice when it’s all over and she can get on with the rest of her career. She was fabulous as Joan Jett in The Runaways!
Hey, if she can’t take the heat, she needs to stay off my 1080p sweet display. You don’t see my fat butt on your TV, do you?
There are plenty of avenues that allow you to act without making you tabloid-fodder, but they don’t tend to be as lucrative. Kristen Stewart is just a spoiled brat.
She’s not a spoiled brat. What is she supposed to do? Move to Syracuse and do community theater? She’s doing what she wants to do, the work and the promotion. The fact that she’s not by nature Miss Happy Smiley Fake Blowing Sunshine Up Your Ass doesn’t mean she’s a spoiled brat.
You know, this morning, the morning DJ on the radio played an audio clip of a paparazzo giving Lindsey Lohan a hard time as she was walking to the gym. They guy was just getting in her face (I suppose - it was radio) about her house next to Samantha Rossum. I just felt so sorry for Lohan because no one really deserves or signs up for that treatment. She may not be a saint, and say what you will about her talent, but she is still a fellow traveler in this world and deserves to live her life in peace.
Kristin, though, was on a TV show to smile pretty and accept a couple of awards. Yet, she just looked so uncomfortable with herself. I can understand getting tired of the promotional nonsense, but I just felt so bad for her. She just seemed like she wanted to be anywhere else.
Well, seriously. If doing talk shows and award ceremonies makes her nervous or uncomfortable, I’m not sure what people would like her to do – squint and try to imagine her piles of money naked? I’d be uncomfortable, too, and no amount of cash would make me better at hiding it.
She’d be a spoiled brat if she tried to use her fame, say, to bully others. But being unable to effect a fake-outgoing facade all the time? Eh.
(I say this never having seen her in a role and only vaguely knowing who she is … so I may be off base.)
She’s a teenage girl. What teenage girl is comfortable in her own skin?
Actually, looking up her birthday on imdb it looks like she turned 20 last April. Close enough.
Ok, I went looking for video and found it on the People’s Choice page. Now I’m totally at a loss as to what the OP is talking about. She seems perfectly happy, and if there’s any discomfort, it’s probably being wary that she not show anything she shouldn’t while wearing that miniskirt.
People’s Choice web site I can’t do a direct link, but scroll down to Show 2011 (right after Back Stage and Red Carpet), and click the “See More Videos” icon, and then you should see “The People’s Choice for favorite Movie Actress is Kristen Stewart.”
I’ve liked Kristen since I saw her in David Fincher’s Panic Room with Jodie Foster. She’s always been reserved and shy, never bubbly and beaming, but always pleasant and polite. Here are a couple of interviews from when she was younger, pre-Twilight. I can’t find any Panic Room interviews:
Interview from Catch That Kid
More Catch That Kid
Into The Wild interview
Here’s a fan video that shows she’s not a mope though, there are several funny scenes in it.
I like these quotes from her IMDB trivia page:
We all, aside from the very, very fortunate, have to deal with aspects of our jobs that aren’t enjoyable. For instance, I spend my days standing behind a register opposite a display laptop that plays Twilight on a loop. Every time I glance up, I get to see that piss-poor excuse for an actress pulling one of two facial expressions for the camera. No matter how much that annoys me, I still pull on a happy face and greet my next customer like I’m thrilled to be there because that’s my job. The differences between me and Kristen Stewart is that a) I’m convincing in my role and b) I do this phenomenal acting job for a few bucks an hour over minimum wage, not millions of dollars and free clothes and international travel and what have you.
If she wants to be an actress and not have to do publicity then community theatre in Syracuse is for her. If she wants to make scads of money then she needs to suck up the publicity-trail as part of her job and act like she’s not being forced there at gunpoint.
She’s been pretty open with how difficult she finds the trappings of fame. She got some flack for comparing the scrutiny of the paparazzi to rape in an interview, for instance. And I also remember her talking about how she never really wanted to be an actor, because she’s never been one who craves attention - but her whole family is involved in the tv and film industry, and she turned out to have a natural talent for acting even as a young kid, and got the roles she happened to audition for.
That said I don’t think she seems *that *uncomfortable at most public appearances I’ve seen her at. Some have been pretty bad (she looks scared), but at most she just seems to revel a bit less in all the attention than your average narcissist, er, celebrity. Even her smile looks a bit shy - all her non-acting facial expressions tend to, in fact. And she doesn’t have the best posture, that tends to project lack of confidence even when you’re pretty, wearing a designer dress, and walking the red carpet.
Any introvert would be conflicted/uncomfortable with the Hollywood machine and modern paparazzi scene. That’s what she is - it’s rare in Hollywood.
As proof of your assertion I offer this, Twilight’s top ten ridiculous facials.
She’s probably thinking Man, they don’t have any wifi here! I fear I am going to go into withdrawal if I don’t get my SDMB fix! What if there has been some new development in the airplane-treadmill debate?!
Cazzle, you sound like a jealous teenage Pattinson/Lautner fangirl. You and don’t ask are both mistaking her acting ability with the way Bella was written and must be played. Directors such as David Fincher, Sean Penn, Walter Salles, Barry Levinson, Griffen Dunn, David Gordon Greene, Mike Figgis, and Jon Favreau aren’t known to hinge their movies on “piss poor” actors so your judgement is suspect. She’s a good actress, you just probably haven’t seen much if any of her work outside of Twilight. I like that she alternates between the big Twilight films and small indies such as Get Out The Rileys, The Runaways, Adventureland, and the beautiful Yellow Hankerchief.
Sorry, but it’s not her fault you have such a lousy job and have to endure scenes from terrible movies while at work. I feel for you.
Honestly, she’s just not that good an actress. Lots of other actresses are unhappy, but they can at least look happy. She tries so hard, bless her little heart, but doesn’t really succeed.
Have you seen The Runaways?
I have. It’s Kristen Stewart in a wig, with a little less pouting. Still a shitty actress.
Seriously? She needs to? As far as I can tell, all she needs to do is what continues to get her well-paying work, and whatever she’s doing seems to be working out for her so far. If that stops working then the problem will resolve itself.
You sound almost as if you begrudge her the fame and the wealth. I watched the video posted above of her award acceptance, and frankly she just looked nervous – not mean, not bitchy, not scornful. Give me a million dollars and I’ll get up in front of a live audience but no amount of money is going to permit me to hide my nervousness. I don’t think that’d make me a spoiled brat.
I can’t find a basis for this statement. She makes scads of money, and she doesn’t act as perky as you want her to. So why you claim she “needs” to act perky is beyond me. She appears to be doing fine without it.
