I have a Motorola Droid with the latest Android 2.0 OS. I’m in an office building where the cell service signal is quite poor. On the other hand I’m sitting right next (literally) to a WiFi router that is operating perfectly. The Droid Wifi applet shows it sees the WiFi router and is fully logged onto the connection.
In using various Droid apps that require a net connection a number seem to want to fix on using the very weak 3G signal vs the powerful WiFi connection and the attempt at web connection often fails. It seems the Droid is not even trying to use the WiFi connection.
Is there a way to fix this. Is this normal Droid behavior? Do apps select which net interface they want?
Finally Had to do a hard reset and re-initialize the wifi router and re-enter the security data , but they are finally playing together. How the hell can a device fully see and be acknowledged as logged onto a wifi connection, but refuse to browse?
This problem is not unique to droid. My windows mobile HTC smartphone and my new blackberry both suffer from this wi-fi affliction. When I want to stream videos, I physically turn off the phone part, so that I can be assured it’s giving the router the old college try.
I not only find 3G faster, but it uses less battery power as well. The only time I switch to wifi is when I can’t get a 3G signal or I want to upload a youtube video.
BTW I find that at least once a week my Droid has an issue that requires power cycling.
I don’t come around here as often as I did, and I wonder if this is a new trend. A while back, one out of every 40 or 50 questions started with, “Why does my cat…” Is it “Why does my Droid” now?
