…Perform one of those Illegal Operations? I’m surfing along and BAM “This program has performed and illegal operation and will be shut down”! It has been doing this frequently and its really getting annoying!! I have some problems with Internet explorer doing that too, but not as much.
You’re downloading illegal drugs. Lucky the cops haven’t found out.
When was the last time you completely reloaded your machine? If it’s been a while, I would suggest backing up your data and starting over. Windows has a wonderful habit of keeping tons of crap you don’t want, even when you think you’ve gotten rid of it. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature, and it can cause problems with lots of programs. Good luck.
Browsers (Netscape and Internet Explorer to name two) are more complex beasts than simply ways to display information from a web site. With a slick enough programmer they can be made to do all sorts of things. It’s these ‘all sorts of things’ that can cause problems. An applet (Java program) starting can be one example of something your PC doesn’t like for one reason or another.
I experienced the same thing with Netscape a while back and my PC never really got back to normal. Eventually I just re-built my whole PC. That does NOT mean you will necessarily experience the same thing. There are thousands of ways my PC could have differed from yours so you may be able to get away with a small cleanup to get things back to normal.
- Clear the Cache folder in Netscape and/or Internet Explorer. In Windows NT the folder is: C:\WINNT\PROFILES*<PROFILE NAME>*\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES
In Windows 98 there is a Disk Cleanup utility that will clear your cached internet files for you (look for it under accessories). Unfortunately I don’t know if this will take care of Netscape as well. Netscape you may have to dig this stuff up on your own and delete it. I’d tell you where to look but I don’t have a copy running on my PC here at work.

Update your software to the latest version. Both Netscape and Internet Explorer are constantly updated with security patches and new features. You might even consider uninstalling and re-installing the latest versions (if you uninstall make sure you save your Favorites list if you’ve got a bunch of stuff bookmarked…e-mail as well if you use either as your e-mail reader).
-
Patch your operating system (OS). If you are using Windows 98 there is a Windows Update feature that will automatically look at your system and recommend upgrades (to the OS and/or Microsoft Applications). Pretty cool really. For the other operating systems/programs you may have to dig the stuff up yourself.

Consider doing a full-defragmentation on your harddrive if you haven’t done one in 6 months or more. This really doesn’t have anything to do with your current problems but while your at spiffing everything else up you may as well finish the job (note: Windows NT does not have a built in dosk defragmenter). Depending on your system and size of your harddrive this can take hours so don’t bother waiting around to watch it since you can’t do anything else while it’s running.
Hope this helps…
First thing to do is to go to Edit Preferences/Advanced and turn off Java and Java Script. See if that helps…it cut my Netscape crashes by 90%. Does wonders for those window spawning hell holes too.
To clear the cache in Netscape, you go to the edit:preferences menu item, open up “advanced”, and under “cache” you can clear your disk and memory caches, and set a size for it to automatically clear them. I don’t know if this will help the crashes, though… Most crashes seem to be related to Java.
Now we all know where you surf to when not on SDMB.
I know of only one type of site that does the ‘windows spawning hell hole’ you mention and you usually have to agree that you’re over 18 and in a State where such material is legal before you enter.
Of course…I just heard that somewhere. Wouldn’t know myself ;).
OG, you did not say what operating system you are using or what version of Netscape, so really can’t answer your question yet…
Netscape says to rename netscape.hst to something else or delete it to correct this situation…Also, it’s been answered here before, also, the netscape newsgroups answer it often.
Besides getting good advice from the gents here at SDMB I’ve also emailed support@rcn.com and 1 800-746-4726 I’ve done everything I’ve been told and now I only bet the blue screen once per blue moon. Big Relief!
If you have an email listed I’ll forward the information send to me to you.
