Who here ever saw the 80’s TV show “Too Close for Comfort” with Jim Jay Bullock? He played a supposedly straight writer who lived with Jack Knight the newspaper owner. He drew the comic strip character “The Cosmic Cow” or something. In any event my question is this…
Does anyone else out there remember Monroe (Bullock) being beaten up and raped by two fat women in a van? It was in the third season and he was extremely upset about it (as I recall one of the central themes to the show was his virginity and it was taken from him in that episode.)
Does anyone else remember this?
I seem to be the only person who has any recollection of this episode. My coworkers think I’m full of shit and accuse me of making up the entire senario.
Oh, BTW, please be aware that I am not, never have been, and will never be proud of the fact that I watched that show. It was a very difficult and painful moment in my life, and had it not been for my tender age I might have drank myself into a coma.
I vaguely remember the show but not much about it, so I can’t give you any personal help there (although I did want to mention that the actor’s name is, inexplicably, JM J Bullock – no “i” in “JM”).
However, you might try asking your question here, and then let us know if anyone can answer your question. Good luck!
 I think it’s just about being avant-garde and artsy. He was born Jim, and has gone by Jim for most of his career, IIRC, but his name is, apparently, JM.
Ted Knight played Henry Rush, who was a cartoonist. Monroe Ficus was just his annoying neighbor played by JM J. Bullock (I believe the JM thing was to avoid a Jim Bullock working elsewhere. Sad thing is there is actually an E! True Hollywood Story about JM J, and I watched the whole damn thing.)
Here’s the TCFC Jump the Shark page, a couple of comments seem to back up your memory.
You’re not alone, LL. I also remember this episode. The memory of it popped into my mind a few weeks ago, and I would have posted about it if I hadn’t forgotten about it before I got back to the computer.
IIRC, there’s a scene where Henry persuades Monroe to take him to the apartment of the two female rapists so Henry can see these women for himself. A very obese woman answers the door and makes a suggestive remark. Monore panics and shouts “It’s her! The little one!” and runs away. Henry huffs “The little one?” in that inimitable Ted Knight style before the woman grabs him and tries to drag him into the apartment, presumably so she can have her way with him as well. Funny stuff, huh? I can’t believe I still remember this shit.
Sound familiar, LL? (Oh, and why is this in the Pit?)
Yeah that sounds eerily familiar. I did see that episode as well. I put this in BBQ Pit instead of MPSIMS because I was taking a lot of heat for it at work and I was in a BBQ Pit state of mind. But yes, you are right, next time I’ll post it in there.
