They need to find a 15 yr old girl to have a crush on him and get him to sign her poster.
Tebow was better as a rookie in the nfl than all the playes mentioned
Tebow with a pretty weak game even though he technically led a comeback (credit to the PK who hit a 51 yarder with no time left.) 6-11 for 93 yards, 3 sacks, 1 fumble lost, 0 TD’s or INT’s. 26 of his passing yards came on a 2 yard screen pass that the back ran with. He also dropped a (low) snap and had a delay of game penalty. He played a quarter and a half.
This is not close to true. Tom Brady’s problem was he weighed about a buck ninety in college and wasn’t athletically impressive. The scouting reports still praised his smarts and his reads, his accuracy and touch, and his poise in the pocket. That’s bizarro Tebow. The only thing that’s even similar is the part about beating the defense deep.
I watched Tebow play a little bit last night and I was surprised at how bad his motion still is.
He still brings that ball back low and kind of does something with his wrist and then eventually brings it up where it’s supposed to be and throws - when you compare that to good quarterbacks it makes me think he’s got a long way to go. If he hasn’t been able to rid himself of that so far, knowing that it’s a problem, it’s possible it’s too ingrained and he will never get past it.
I think the biggest thing is the overly fawning media coverage he got at UF. “If you spend 20 minutes with Tim Tebow, your life will be better” and the like. Broadcasters gave him so many Favre Jobs, people start hating on the guy. Not his fault, but understandable.
I tend to think the Evangelical thing works both ways; it’s also why some people love him.
OK, color me surprised when I went to look up their stats.
Passer rating, rookie year:
Tebow 82.1 (started last three games of season; played in 7 games, but only threw passes in four)
Leinart 74.0 (played in 12 games, started in 11)
Carr 62.8 (started all 16 games; also set the single-season record for being sacked)
Russell 55.9 (limited play; he only played in 4 games, and only started 1)
Leaf 39.0 (played in 10 games, started 9; threw only 2 TDs vs. 15 INTs…good grief, he was bad)
Russell, due to comparable playing time, is the only fair comparison. I could’ve done better than Russell!
Denver had three first downs, one by penalty, while Brady Quinn was in last night. He was 4/12 for 26 yards and an interception.
Tebow was 7/11 for 116 yards with a TD for a 129.4 QB rating.
Of course, Tebow’s numbers are inflated by playing against what was probably a college all-star team defense, but it’s stuff like this that shows the picture is never as clear as we think.
Yeah those numbers are totally inflated. My preconceived notions prove it.
Actually, it is hard to use those types of numbers. Last pre-season, 49ers’ rookie Anthony Dixon led the league in exhibition rushing yardage, and then did jack diddly squat when given touches in the regular season.
The questions with Tebow in that game are things like, did he stare down his receiver? Did he move well in, and stay inside, the pocket? How was his footwork?
Just for shits and giggle, I checked his stats for the game. From under center he was 2-4 for 13 yards, a sack, and an 8 yard scramble on a 2nd and 8.
I watched the game last night. Denver didn’t play a single starter at all. Phoenix played it’s ones for the first quarter. Quinn wasn’t good, but the plays went like this - run, run, pass on third and nine. Tebow got almost all of his yards on one drive with three minutes to go, against players that are going to get cut today and tomorrow. His TD pass was to a guy who didn’t have a defender within 15 yards of him in the end zone. The fourth string guy, an undrafted free agent from Minnesota, came in and completed one pass for 89 yards against the same defense.
I saw last week’s game just the other day, and I was stunned to see how lost he looked. Just utterly lost. Like a guy who’s never played the position since high school and is sent back there because of a rash of injuries.
I really wish him well, but he looked like a classic case of a guy who is used to always having his superlative athleticism to fall back on, and who suddenly finds himself in a place where everyone else is just as fast and just as strong as he is for the first time in his life.
Hate to draw too many conclusions from one half of preseason, but it was a real eye-opener for me.
It looks like the Tim Tebow era has begun in Denver. He came in down 23-10 to SD midway through the 3rd. He got em back to 29 and 24 and the Broncos were on the 35 yard line with one play left. The last pass was incomplete after a decent scramble.
He played ok, and did a reasonable job getting his team back in the game. It’s only one game, but it’s shown how ridiculous the idea of releasing him was.
Tebow’s stats on 10/9:
Attempts 10
Completions 4
Yards 79
TDs 1
Int 0
Rating 101.7
Carries 6
Yards 38
Avg 6.3
TDs 1
Long 12
Orton was 6 for 13 for 34 yards, 0 TDs and 1 int.
Tebow was throwing against a prevent defense most of the time so his stats are a bit inflated IMHO, but he did seem to rally the team.
Denver fans gave John Elway a heavy load of abuse in his first couple of years there, too. Look, QB’s take a few years to get good in today’s NFL. Maybe Tebow will never amount to shit, but maybe he will - and he’s showed some flashes of adequacy already.
In my fantasy scoring, that would be 18 pts. How many minutes did he play?
Orton was -1
.
I’m still FAR from sold on Tebow (who always looked like a reach to me), but it’s pretty clear by now that the Broncos are NOT a playoff contender this year.
So, I guess they might as well give the job to Tebow for a while, if only to see if he’s ANY good at all. Right now, Orton is STILL a much better NFL quarterback, but it’s pretty clear they’re not going anywhere with Orton under center. So, what can they lose?
I don’t know about that. Orton’s been hot garbage, and at his best was middle of pack starter. Tebow’s shown things in the games he’s played in. I wouldn’t go so far as to say Tebow is better, but he’s made it at least a competition. Or at least Orton has by playing so poorly.
Orton’s been pretty average this year, but last year he was playing like a man possessed. The whole “quarterback controversy” at the end of last season and in this year’s preseason was made-up nonsense.
Tebow has the makings of a good NFL QB, that much is obvious. But declaring him the “Right Now” (as opposed to “The Possible Future”) is a stretch.
I think this is exactly right. At some point – maybe not right now, but at some point – they have to let him start a few games, or else the distraction will carry on into next year.
