Just so you know, What Exit?, the South is much more subtle and genteel in its social relations and communications than is the north. It is the culture that ostracizes with a blessing. A merchant’s representative would more likely say, “Please don’t do that, sir or ma’am,” than “Knock it off.” Said to the wrong people, the latter might come across as an invitation to fight, with “it” referencing the chip on the speaker’s shoulder.
On the other hand — what with context being everything — a pregnant and barefoot homemaker chasing her yard apes back and forth between the trailer and the toilet while they laugh heartily at all the damage they’re causing might very likely scream at them, “Y’all knock it off!”

This is simply not true. Well meaning, in fact, but simply not true.
Libertarianism is far more flexible than other forms of government. Libertarianism can be either left or right. But what it is especially good at is defense, and possibly in a midfield position if worse comes to worse. You’re going to need your Fascists and Monarchists playing forward because they can react quickly and hopefully punch it in to the net, but they fade in the stretch. Good at attack, but they fold when pressured. For midfielders you normally want Oligarchists. They may be bastards, but they’re stable bastards and they work as a team. Not much movement forward, though. The Communists are your fullbacks. They bend, but damnit they’ll throw their whole families in front of the opposing team’s Fascists before they let them get past.
The Libertarians need to play a wing position, divided between backfield and mid, with occasional runs forward. They need to try to stay back though, because allthough the Despot keeping goal is going to do every damn thing in his power to protect his small bit of turf, he doesn’t always make the right decisions.
And I, for one, appreciate your demonstrating that on a daily basis.

I’ve lived in both the South and the North, and I don’t agree.
No one has subtle insults down pat like Minnesota Nice - but its called Minnesota Nice because it is in fact, very polite behavior - in its German farm immigrant sort of way. The South does not have a lock on passive aggressive niceness or polite behavior - and the North is more than the New Jersey “Fuck off is pretty much the same as Good Morning” stereotype.
But Southern Gentility is not the standard of this board. This board is based on Midwestern (Chicago) snarkiness. Just like you can’t define the word liberal for everyone on this board, you don’t get to define the standards of behavior. Moderator snarkiness is a FEATURE of this board for a lot of us.
And, quite frankly, there are more than a few Dopers who need far more than a friendly, polite warning. Knock it off is what you say to kids who are going to take 'well, now, Bobby, is that any way to treat your sister?" as an opening for “hell, yes.” And we have more than a few posters (and a correlation between those posters and the need to give warnings) that have about that level of maturity.
If I knew anything about soccer, I might have enjoyed the rest of your post. But the above part of it is imprecise inasmuch as libertarianism is not a form of government at all. Democracy is a form of government. Monarchy is a form of government. Republic is a form of government. But libertarianism is a political philosophy, and may be applied within any arbitrary form of government.

Unfortunately, parts of New Jersey - yeah, the rep is that bad. New Jersey and NYC is not exactly held up as the epitome of polite and friendly behavior.
I’ve been to New Jersey (down by Hamilton Township) and NYC and I have to say they are lovely places that don’t live up to its reputation. But then, I’ve been to the South and would have to say Southern gentility is also overrated.
Just posting a random anecdotal data point:
I am 36, born and raised in the South. “Knock it off!” is something one says to one’s irritating younger siblings when they are being particularly irritating. The phrase can also be used in telling your goofy friends to “knock it off” when they are being goofy in a situation that calls for more gravity (ie: explaining things to one’s parents, trying to impress a member of the opposite sex, or being obtuse while you’re trying to explain something important to them-such as gravitational force)
