Why don’t you move to Honolulu?

Now, if I could go back in time and live in a less-populated Hawaii…

If I lived someplace like Honolulu, I’d cringe every time a magazine encouraged people to move there.

Everyone in our small town gets excited when we make The Boys’ Life “Ten Awesomest Places To Live”, but I want to yell "Shut up about that! With more people, we won’t be awesomest… "

.

So, umm… can we get you to do a thread on that?

I’ve lived semi-isolated in the past. Alaska, other than climate, is much like Hawaii in that to get anywhere else in the US, it’s at least a four hour flight. Goods are more expensive, and some companies won’t even ship there. There’s also this inbred hate of government. I don’t want to do that again.

There are smaller/remoter Pacific islands with fewer tourists just because you are not even near a city any more. However, as said, you are even more isolated, everything (assuming it is even shipped there) is more expensive, and you had better consider the transportation options for getting on/off the island very carefully.

I lived on the quarantine station for four months (December 1983-March 1984) with my new bride and her guide dog. We could leave but Misty Dawn couldn’t.

We missed each other, but not by much. I had cats in quarantine there in July 1984 and again in August 1989. That quarantine facility was really something!

Ehh. Nice place to visit, didn’t care for living there. The bungalow we were placed in was standing because the termites were holding hands, we found a termite nest in our mattress, and when it rained, if we took the dog out to relieve her, she’d come back inside and paint the whole place with red clay.
