I have a strong feeling this has been asked before, but I went through eight pages of search results for “hangover” and couldn’t find it.
So I’ll risk boring people with this again. Why do you suppose I don’t get hangovers? It’s not like I don’t drink enough.
The closest I come to a hangover is drinking so much and getting so little sleep that I wake up still drunk. Not the most pleasant feeling, but nothing like what I hear hangovers are supposed to be like. I wake up feeling sorta groggy & crappy everyday, alcohol or no. But I don’t feel different at all after drinking too much.
I’ve felt dehydrated, but again, it’s not particulary unpleasant. I’m just thirsty.
Sometimes I have a craving for salty, fatty foods the next day.
So why can I drink too much, get 7 hours of sleep and wake up feeling normal? Some of my friends drink the same amount and are practically useless the next day. What gives?
Honestly, you many not be drinking enough to get a hangover, especially if you are just drinking beer to get drunk - most beer is fairly low in alcohol content, actually.
Yeah, and then (after sitting in the sun all day drinking) eat some garlic fries and chicken fingers with warm ranch dressing dipping sauce… Always does it for me. Oh wait, that’s puking my guts out, not a hangover
Don’t complain - maybe its just the way your body works. I’ve only ever had one hangover (oddly enough, it was one of the few times I’ve gotten drunk on just beer…) and it sucked, but I’m pretty sure it was mild, too. I don’t wonder why, I just thank my lucky stars…
I thought I was the only one…I not only have never had a hangover (though lordknows I sure have deserved a fair share), I have also never had a headache. Ever. Really.
I once asked a doctor about this and he said that there was a very small percentage of people who just never got headaches. I know I should thank my lucky stars, but I find it odd nonetheless.
I personally hear that wine is the worst hangover ever. This is on report of my girlfriend. I’m also one of those who does not get hung over at all…though I’m not complaining!
I have gotten hangovers before but as I general rule I don’t either. I can even drink 20+ drinks in a night and wake up with nothing more than a mild “cotton mouth” and a heavy thirst.
If you drink very often, your body will just get used to the alcohol and other components and just blow it off.
That being said, I am pretty sure that we could come up with some stuff that would give you a horrific hangover if given in sufficient quantity. I agree with the tequila choice. Tequila can be very nasty. There is this incredibly strong sugary drink called a hand grenade in New Orleans that made me so that I couldn’t look at light or walk for all of the next day.
Oh, I have some more. Go for several $2 bottles of Mad dog 20-20 or even better, Night Train. That will do it. Sweet hard liquors like Southern Comfort would probably make you feel like hell too.
Make sure that you get piss drunk off of one of the above substances and them ask us why a hangover hurts so damn much.
Well yes, I think the Tequila, sun & strong foods probably would make me sick. But, I’m betting I wouldn’t have a hangover the next day. I’ve made myself sun-sick before. I’ve also (in college) drank enough tequila to puke my guts out. I just don’t recall having a hangover the next day.
I have gotten a few headaches in my lifetime, but they’re rare. Sinus congestion headaches I can get.
Too much sun, dehydration, wine & sweet sugary drinks can give me a headache while I’m imbibing, but not the next morning. I think my body doesn’t handle sugar well.
As for the Mad dog experiment - uh, no. Don’t think I’ll try that one.
I don’t get hangovers, either. There have been some times when I got pretty drunk (straigh Russian vodka will do that to you), but I woke up the next morning still drunk.
I have several hypotheses:
My metabolism. I can feel the effects of a drink very quickly, and I can feel it fading away just as quickly. Maybe my blood alcohol is still elevated; I don’t know. I do know that the lightheadedness that alcohol causes never lasts more than half an hour after I stop drinking, and goes away even more quickly if I make a rest stop.
I don’t drink to get drunk. I drink to enjoy the flavor. As such, one or two drinks are fine with me. But this doesn’t explain why I never got hung over when I did drink to excess.
Type of alcohol. I stick with wine, liqueurs, and mixed drinks, these days. Though I used to drink straight Russian vodka and Beam’s Choice (smooth).
I always drink something non-alcoholic before going to sleep. Alcohol dries me out (I can’t imagine why people drink it to quench thirst – that’s like putting out a fire with kerosene), so I usually have some soda or orang juice before calling it a night (otherwise I wake up dying of thirst). Since a big part of the hangover is dehydration, this probably helps.
When I was in college I never got hangovers, no matter how much I drank. It used to drive my friends nuts; we’d all be partying half the night and the next morning I’d be sitting in the cafeteria eating a hearty breakfast while they’d be trying to force down a glass of juice.
I don’t remember anything particular about my drinking habits that might have explained it. I seem to recall vodka & OJ as my usual drink, and it was not uncommon for me to kill a half-pint of vodka in a single night.
I hardly ever drink now, so I can’t say whether I’m still immune to hangovers.
I rarely get hungover, too. In fact, if I drink a lot, more than half the time I end up waking up fully awake earlier than I normally do. It’s really weird. However, if I get drunk on champagne or sparkling wine, that’s the end of me. Especially the sweet crap that everyone seems to have around on New Year’s.
Generally, for me, it’s the sweet drinks that give me headaches in the morning. That’s why I stick with beer and shots. Beer very rarely gets me groggy in the morning, and clear alcohol, like vodka, slivovitz, or tequila, NEVER hangs me over.
Just be thankful. Some people just aren’t that prone to it.
If you are used to alcohol, you can get hangover only at greater consumation of alcohol. In my case that would be about 0,75 l of spirits. 0,5 l is OK. No hangover for me, just still drunk in the morning.
I have the same ability as you. I once polished off a fifth of Jack Daniels by myself. Woke up fine except for a wicked case of cotton mouth. Had a good breakfast and that was it.
What exactly is a hangover?
The 3rd and 4th paragraphs seem the most relavent. Your body (and mine) must just be better at getting rid of those toxins that cause the hangover in the first place.
My understanding is that the ability to drink to excess without getting hangovers is one of many possible genetic predispositions to alcoholism. In other words, you can drink without (outwardly) having physical repercussions, so you are not disinclined to keep doing it.
I believe the same is true for those who get “black outs” when they drink.
In my experience, the type of drink affect the nature of the hangover. Some beers contain all sorts of horrible additives which can magnify the hangover, while Red wine which is heavy in tanin can also give you a “blinder”.
On average our bodies can metabolise one unit of alcohol (half a pint of normal strength beer or small glass of wine) in about an hour, so I would say this means if you drink slowly you are going to less intoxicated than if you drink quickly.
