I think it’s gotten a little better. I don’t watch it very often, but for the first couple seasons you could play “name the X-Files episode this episode ripped off.” Now they’ve moved on from that.
I’ve sold a few friends on watching Miss Mars on television based on the pitch that “Veronica is what Chloe would be if she were smart and didn’t need Clark around to save her.”
The people are good looking, the plots are fun, and it’s watchable. I loved John Schneider, and miss him. Lex and Lionel are the best things on the show, though Justin “Fox Crane” Headley’s Oliver Queen is becoming a very interesting character. I hope they bring Arthur Curry back.
The appeal of the show waxed and waned for me, until they killed off a certain character, and then I just threw up my hands and walked away.
The last year or so, I’ve been Tivo-ing for several weeks, then having a four-or-five-episode blowout to catch up. I was fanatic about it for the first four years, at least, and I still really enjoy it. I don’t even mind how they mess with the mythology, as long as they continually do it in an interesting way (although, they’ve fallen flat a couple times, of course).
So many things to reply to … hang on.
Miles better. I recently went back and watched some of the first season, and I really couldn’t believe the improvement of all the younger cast members.
I recall hearing recently (no cite, of course) that comic writers have been specifically forbidden to add Chloe anywhere into a post-college timeline–which probably doesn’t bode well for her survival. I’d like to see her live and somehow become Lois, myself (which was what I seriously hoped would happen after she spent most of the third season writing under Lois’ name and then “died”), but I don’t think she’ll ever be Supergirl.
That’s interesting. I remember when the first season aired, and the writers said “Five seasons, no more. And no flying, and no tights.” The first two things have already gone out the window, so I guess we’ll get to the tights eventually, too. Oh, poor me. Faced with the idea of Tom Welling in Lycra. How will I survive???
And hey, Annie …
There’s an upcoming episode called “Justice” that will have Oliver Queen, Arthur Curry, Bart Allen, and Victor Stone making reappearances.
And is there anyone besides me who’s been praying for Lana’s death since about the middle of the second season?
This season I catch bits of the first half during the commercial breaks for My Name is Earl and then watch the second half. I thought last night was pretty good. Lana’s elevator scene worked and seemed so unexpected for her character. She’s fun to watch when she’s not interacting with Clark, which they seem to be minimizing. I also like Lois/Green Arrow plotline. If it wasn’t on at the same time as Earl I’d watch the whole thing.
I used to like it, but I really got tired of Lana, as well as the longing looks between her and Clark and the relationship that never went anywhere.
I agree, Chloe and Lex (and his dad) are the strong points.
When they moved it up against Survivor and now Earl/Office, I just didn’t care enough to tape it.
Word.
I’ve been a fan since season 1, but I work on Thursdays now. I have the last 3 episodes on tape for me as soon as I find time for them.
The episodes are very hit or miss. Season 4 was a lot more miss than hit and season 5 was a lot more hit than miss.
I only tune in to the eps that feature James Marsters. The rest of the time, the kid who plays Supe annoys me. He can’t act - he’s so wooden that he ought to worry about termites, not kryptonite.
No, that makes perfect sense. You know they’re supposed to be attractive, but their “looks” do nothing for you. It’s probably because their looks are formulated to appeal to a preteen set.
Part of the reason I don’t watch is that I can’t stand to look at the main actor’s wide-eyed, pursed-lip face. Why does he keep that facial expression on, all the time?
Man, you gotta be kidding me. I had to be google her to figure out which actress you were talking about. I never imagined you could be referring to the fugly mom with the bad teeth…
It’s a formulaic soap-operaesque show with spates of bad acting and ridiculous characterization.
However, the actors are hot.
In other news, I am extremely shallow.
I’m not middle-aged, but count me in with the good doctor here. No tolerance for watching teens on TV, thank you.
And that’s why I love you.
Yep. Superman is an iconic hero, not an angst-filled teen.
I watch it occasionally, and I particularly like when reference is made to the rest of the DC Universe, like the Aquaman episode. If rumors are accurate, this season should be good. Smallville suffers from 3 big problems, though (leaving out the obligatory “Hi Opal”.)
-
A couple of sucky storylines, particularly the “Lana the tatooed black witch” stuff.
-
The story line never seems to really progess, or does very slowly.
and the biggie:
- Time slot. I have two tivos with a total of 3 tuners, and Smallville is across from Survivor, Earl/Office and Betty. I enjoy Smallville at times, but it comes in fourth after those.
I really want to like this show, I’m the hugest fan of the idea of Superman (if not always the actual comics), but it’s hard. Too much teen angst, and so much of that focused in Lana. I cannot stand her character, and haven’t been able to since the beginning. That whole witch story arc was absurd.
I watch too. Sometimes you get a really sucky episode, but there’s almost always something good to watch – usually Lex or Lionel. I’d watch a show called The Luthors (I would also accept Stately Luthor Matte Painting as a title) that was all about Lex and Lionel fighting and backstabbing and occasionally teaming up.
Even Lana was moderately interesting this week, with her taking to threats and blackmail like a fish to water. Damn, girl.
I’m predisposed to Green Arrow lust anyway, but I like the guy who’s playing Oliver Queen. I haven’t seen the rejected Aquaman pilot that he starred in, but now I want to. In addition to The Luthors, I would be very willing to watch a Green Arrow spinoff.
That’s Justin Headley, whom I first noticed noticed when he was playing Fox Crane on the NBC soap Passions. I liked him on that show, and I like him as the Green Arrow.
