why has property subsumed art?

two things.

1)graffiti. getting away from notions of ‘marking’ and how common it is in the animal kingdom (and among some very bad-ass plants). most of the things that i ever see as decoration or read are either trying to sell me shit or get me into a store where i will buy shit.

  1. copyright. more and more shite is being crammed down my throat every day if i so much as look at a media outlet. now, i could simply not look (or listen, or use my new smellivision), but that dodges the point. the point is that more and more of this utter brainwashing crap is flowing around, as part of the environment we live in, and there ain’t a goddman thing we can do about it.

what do these two listings have in ccommon? the fact that both involve saturation of most people’s consciousness with untold levels of information, information which we have no control over and have no way of responding to. sure the leagal arguments make sense, but ignore the fact that business, and not individual persons, get the long end of the stick.

okay, so this post is a lot making a lot less sense than i would have hoped. i don’t want to spend any more time on it right now. but if anybody wants clarification oor thinks i’m full of crizud, you know what to do.

So, you’re saying that you feel like you’re suffering from information overload? Join the club.

I’d say you were full of crizud, if I had the slightest idea what crizud was.

Don’t forget that other members of the animal kingdom will leave “markings” as more than just signs saying, “This is my territory, keep out.” Some will also leave markings as a way of saying, “Hey there, oppositely-sexed members of my species! There’s a really great specimen of mating material nearby. Sniff around 'til you smell someone who smells like this mark, and then, well, come shop in my store, as it were!”

I think someone needsa a trip to the art museum. Try this one. http://www.toledomuseum.com/

Or you can visit this site which belongs to a friend of mine. http://www.mockensturm.com Make sure you play with Kingspin when you get there.

Nothing a little anarchy can’t do. I saw a poster I thought was a GAP ad on a wall in Boston last month. It was really anti-GAP – a picture of a guy in one of those cheesy outfits with little arrows explaining what child labor sweatshop was responsible for making each item.

Right. The briefcase drop point at the corner of 42nd and Hanover as usual. Chalk the third green mailbox (apartment 47b). Pickup at pier 19, 3 AM sharp. I won’t be late. Remeber - the baloney sandwich sleeps on the red fence.

Please bury the $2317 Secret Society entrance fee in a cookie tin in your backyard, and one of our underground agents will contact you.

Now then.

Au contraire, mi amigo. You can turn the TV off. You can cancel your subscription to People. You can not even notice the billboard because you’re busy avoiding the prick on the cell phone who’s weaving between lanes. Property has not subsumed art. Property has subsumed the mass culture, which is by no means a recent occurrence. What, you want your art handed to you on a silver platter? You want Tom Brokaw to recommend some deliciously subversive literature right between “The Story of One Courageous Puppy” and “Toaster Ovens: Slient Baby Killers”? You want art, you’re going to have to do what everyone else has to do: look for it. Unless you’re Emperor or something, in which case the art will indeed come to you, and you may disregard the above.

This isn’t anything new. In the Pompeii dig they find advertisements for brothels and other things written on the walls and even on the streets themselves.

I’m a little unsure what this has to do with copyrights.

I read the title and think, “An art thread and I wasn’t invited?!?”

I read the OP and think, “This is an art thread?”

I read some of the responses and think, “How do these all fit together…?”

jb_farley… can you clarify what you’re trying to say here? That business takes advantage of artists? That art really isn’t art? That our laws stifle real artists? What?
