Why hate the Dallas Cowboys so much?

'Cuz I’m a Redskins fan.

well, I don’t really hate the Cowboys… but I do enjoy the rivalry

Oh my goodness, I laughed way too hard at that.

No the 'skins/'boys rivalry precedes the Cowboys being in the league. George Marshall, owner of the 'skins was going to vote against the Cowboys being an expansion team in 1960 but he’d ticked off his band leader who sold the rights to ‘Hail to the Redskins’ to Clint Murchison, earstwhile owner of the Cowboys. Clint traded the rights to the song in exchange for Marshall’s vote to let them in the league.

Preach it, brother! I was going to come in here and say the exact same thing- growing up as an Oiler fan made you pretty well a Cowboys-hater by definition.

Although nowadays, I’ll watch the Cowboys (mostly because I live in Dallas, and they’re on all the time) and I try my best to keep up with the Texans, but I’ll be absolutely damned if I’ll watch a down of a Titans game (used to be the Oilers).

I remember desperately hoping that Bud Adams would be struck deaf, dumb and blind before the end of that Titans Super Bowl a few years back and never know if they won or lost.

**Why hate the Dallas Cowboys so much? **

It is fun!

I started watching Football in around 1973 or 1974. I am a **Giants ** fan. That is enough reason.

The Dallas fans pop up all over the country. As a group, they are more arrogant about their team’s successes than other fans.

The media of the 70s through the 90s played up the big bad Dallas reputation.

Basically the Cowboys are the Yankees of Football and everyone likes to have one team to hate. I love the Yanks, I hate the Cowboys and if I cared enough about basketball, I would probably hate the Lakers.

Does hockey have an equivalent team?

Jim

Current thread in ATMB: Why can’t there be a “Sports and Games” forum?

Hockey’s equivalent team to hate would be Montreal, although the Habs haven’t been all that good recently. You could substitute Detroit if you’d like.

But Detroit doesn’t have the history that the 3 teams I mentioned do. I use to watch hockey, it dwindled away over the years, but I don’t remember Ranger fans hating any team except the Islanders and vice versa. I don’t know about Montreal, they have the success, but maybe they were short on the asshole fans.

If you want to find a single reason, his name was Tex Shram (sp?).

During his tenure as GM, Shram came up with a lot of marketing gimmicks, like the professional cheerleaders, (I’m drawing a blank, I can’t remember the others).

Shram also cooked up some deals with other teams that left the other team owners feeling like they got the short end of the deal. The trade with Seattle that resulted in the draft pick which the Cowboys used to get Tony Dorsett comes to minds.

Shram coerced, persuaded, whatever, the league to put the expansion Cowboys in the NFC East, even though it didn’t make geographic sense, so that the Cowboys would be in the major TV markets. This was a much bigger deal in the '60s than it is now.

Shram was a shameless promoter of the team and he was good at it.

I think some of it does go back to tv. Being in the NFC East meant a lot of their 4:30 Eastern games were the “Game of the Week.” on Sunday afternoon tv. Just like I’m sick of always getting the Yankees/Red Sox/Cubs/Mets on ESPN and Fox baseball, the Cowboys would always get the national tv coverage. Having them matched up against an NFC East team would get the best ratings.

Still, it ticked off a lot of fans.

Well, bless your little heart!

(Ex-Oiler fan here…'nuff said.)

And they’re cocky assholes.

And pretty much most of what Airman said. GO STEELERS!!!

But not the number of blocks.

If it came down to a Cowgirl win causing the GIANTS to win the division, I still don’t think I could force myself to root for Dallas. I stated it in another thread, but whenever the Cowgirls play the Iggles, regardless of NFC East implications, I always root for a meteor strike.

I am going to quote from a different thread.

Toronto tries to pull the whole “Canada’s Team” bullshit without even having a winning tradition (at least in the last 40 years). Their fans will cheer for them even at a game between two other teams. The Leafs suck, and every Canadian hockey fan who doesn’t like 'em likely hates them. RickJay’s post is genius!

Some things don’t need a reason.

Well… even though I hate the Cowboys, I have to admit that Staubach did pretty much the opposite of that for my family once.

In the late '70s or early '80s a young cousin of mine was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, and he wrote Staubach a letter saying Staubach was his hero and he wished they could meet. So Staubach flew out to meet my cousin and spent a few hours with him, and even signed his helmet and gave it to my cousin. It was a real helmet, too; I remember it was all scratched and dinged up from being worn in games. It sat on top of their TV for a long time after my cousin died.

So in my book it’s “Cowboys Bad, Staubach Awesome.”

Q. Why do the Cowboys look forward to playing in Philadelphia?
A. Because they heard there is crack in the Liberty Bell.

Since I was born & raised on Pittsburgh, it’s tradition.

As a longtime Redskins fan, I consider the question to be its own answer.

Not for this Giant fan. I hate the Cowboys as much as any True American, but when they play the Eagles, I’ll gladly root for the Cowboys. Nothing is worse in all of football than an Eagles win.
