In the fall of 1990, my wife bought a used 1986 Honda Accord with maybe 55K miles on it. At 200,000 miles, it was still almost in as good shape as it was when we bought it. It started showing its age somewhere around 225K miles, though, so in January of 2000, we bought our first new car - a 2000 Accord, of course: what else?
The 1986 Accord’s still rolling, although at 252K miles, it’s a bit of a rattletrap that I wouldn’t want to take on a long trip.
The other day, our 2000 Accord crossed the 50,000 mile mark.
A few days later, the lightbulb that illuminates the dashboard clock burned out.
It’s the first thing that’s gone wrong with the car, in any way, shape, or form - not that having a lightbulb burn out is exactly something going wrong: lightbulbs do that.
It’s been to the shop only for its scheduled maintenance, and all I do to it is drive it and wash it.
My dad owns a 2000 Honda Accord, too. I think it’s 2000 at least. The lease ends in a few weeks and hes turning it in. When the new model comes out he plans to get that. It’s really a nice car.
Of the four cars my family owns, three are Hondas. The Accord, a 2002 Civic, and an Odyssey. We also have a 1990 Ford Probe, which would probably do a job being a better paperweight.
I used to drive a 1992 Accord, and now I drive a 1998 Accord. Great ride, good power, amazing quality and kept it’s value. I’ve put 120,000 km on it so far. Now, if only I could get a standard transmission on my EX-V6, I’d be in heaven.
I absolutely love Accords. I know a guy that has an 86 that is still on its original clutch at about 300,000 Kms. Absolutely amazing. He changes the oil regularily and thats about it. Damn reliable.
My mother bought a new 2001 last year and loves it too. I would have no concerns buying an Accord (although the next new car will almost certainly be a Subaru is beside the point!)
We’re on our third Honda-- I drive a 1998 Accord and my husband drives a 2000 CR-V. We only got rid of #1 (a 1993 Civic) because we wanted something with four doors. Our next car will be a Honda, as will the one after than and the one after that. I think we’ll probably get the Odyssey, although I’m impressed with the retooling of the CR-V.
My '91 Ford Explorer is at 268,000 miles. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it to Florida – it’ll make it.
My '86 Pontiac Fiero just turned over 180,000 – but the speedometer/odometer was disconnected for about 18 months. It’s probably over 200,000 IRL. Just took it on a 1200 mile jaunt this weekend. Ran like a top.
My son’s '86 Honda Civic has about 160,000 miles on it. It’s running good too.
However, close friends had a Civic that was a real POS. It was always broken, and although they made it last for just over 200,000 miles, it wasn’t comfortable or reliable for it’s last few years.
I just wanted to get on the record that it isn’t only Hondas that can last. A lot depends on how you drive a particular vehicle, especially whether or not you completely warm the engine up on any given trip, or drive in stop and go traffic.
Sorry for the blatant hijack, feel free to return to your Accord lovefest…
I’ve had Hondas before, and they’re good little cars, but if you really want superb engineering and performance without jumping into the Mercedes/Lexus class, you should get a Volkswagen. Top notch.
i used to have an 83 accord with a bunch of miles on it, and it was the shittiest car ever! it used to stall out if it was below 40 degrees F outside! i have to disagree, i think hondas are POS!!
I’ve mentioned this before but I too love Honda. I had an ‘87 Accord with a bitchin’ original custom paint job and beat the tar out of it and it just kept going and going. It was the last car I ever had with a carburetor, no electric windows or doors, no air bags, no ABS…just a simple quality car that was super low maintenance (ohh, to find a woman with such charms, but I digress) The car, especially those years from '86-'89 deserve to be built again. What would prevent a Mexican or Korean plant from buying the original plans and building more as they were built in the good old days? Hell, they built the old Beetle for quite a while and I’m sure there are a lot more people nostalgic about the early Accords. I no longer drive Hondas though, I just bought an…
We bought a 1994 Accord new and it’s still running beautifully. Just passed the 90k mark so I had the timing belt changed. Not a thing has gone wrong with it. My old truck died in 1999 so I got the '94 and we bought Mrs. H and new 2000 Accord. The Haj’s are a two Accord family!
ooh ooh, me too!!! I had an 87 Accord, ran like a champ with over 200K miles, then traded it in for a Prelude! Well, the Prelude proved to have too much power for me - I wrecked it into a tree and I came out with just a broken jaw and a couple of cracked bones around my eye because my dumbass didnt have my seatbelt on. After that fiasco I bought an Acura (which is a Honda) and the only thing that has gone wrong with it is some sort of oil cap which they recalled the car for, but I didnt take it in. Here is the best part though, I was warming up my car to drive to Atlanta one morning and I noticed this liquid coming out from the bottom of my car and it was oil. They paid to have my car towed to the dealership, replaced the part that was bad and the timing belt since it got soaked with oil. They also paid for a rental car for me to drive to Atlanta…I will only buy Hondas/Acuras.
PS, I didnt even buy the car from the dealership, I got it out of the paper!!! GREAT JOB HONDA!!
