Well, recently I’ve been lurking over in the Pit, and noticed that a number of people have been unhappy with various aspects of the SDMB. Some of these people have left, which is unfortunate. Personally, I have no intention of doing so. And to perhaps lighten the mood, I figured I’d discuss the good about the SDMB. So I’m inviting everyone to post one little thing they like about it. I’ll go first.
Since I’ve started posting here, I’ve started keeping my dictionary within arm’s reach of the computer. (to prevent misspellings, I understand you people just fine)
I’m here because the board allows me to gather evidence that I can use against my brother. Posting before 9 am EST, Billdo? Hmmm…perhaps you are a morning person after all?
I, too, have been keeping my dictionary close to hand, same reason. I hate to post a misspelled word.
I also agree with billdo and Green Bean on their reasons. This is overall a very caring group of people with a penchant for learning and sharing what they’ve learned.
I also plan on sticking around.
You are more than a human being, you are a human becoming.

That’s my name, not a description. I am neither purple nor a bear. Okay, so I’m purple.<a true Wally original!>
I’m here because Wally is holding me hostage. I can’t leave until I renounce my U.S. citizenship and become a Canadian.
Since everyone is making dictionary confessions, I guess I should, too. I take it a little bit farther though. I keep a CD encyclopedia open that has a dictionary/thesaurus incorporated, and a word processor. Compulsive and anal, that’s me.
I like it for the reasons that I stated in the Ed Zotti post.
As for people quitting the board that is truly unfortunate, but I have something to say about that as well.
It would appear to me that if one wanted to quit this board it is amazingly simple. Wipe if from your favorites, desktop and hard drive and move on.
If you have made close friends here then keep in touch and let them know via email or phone why you are leaving. And stay in touch with them by all means… but don’t leave a Dear John letter to the rest of us that includes the last few complaints and groans?
It is not suicide to leave this board…no justification note is required.
Unless of course you plan to be back one day to read the responses to your final post and then you would be bound to spot one that you had to reply to and then you wouldn’t have left forever at all…You would…well you know what I mean.
It’s hard to imagine that I will ever leave this board, however if I do, it will be in the form of a * break * from it, not a grandstand, parting shot exit that I may possibly regret one day.
Just makes sense dudn’t it?
BTW if I have offended anyone please sit on it and rotate counter clockwise.
One of the few to be personally welcomed to the board by Ed Zotti.
TIME ELAPSED SINCE I QUIT SMOKING:
Six days, 15 hours, 18 minutes and 32 seconds.
265 cigarettes not smoked, saving $33.19.
Life saved: 22 hours, 5 minutes.
<<<<It is not suicide to leave this board…no justification note is required.>>>
I appreciate * reading * that someone has decided to leave. It saves me from wondering what happened to them, and I won’t keep looking for their name.
I realize it makes me sound silly and naive to say that I miss those that have left, I can appreciate and respect ** WHY ** they left, but, I’d rather * know * they were leaving rather than to keep wondering about them.
Now, I’m going to go do something disgusting, because I not only sound like a newbie’s newbie, but also like a high schooler, rather than an old lady, which I am!
I originally came here to learn stuff. I always visit GD and GQ, but I don’t participate there as much as I used to. I like it here in MPSIMS because I like to terrorize the newbies and torment UncleBeer.
Where are the profiles, Unc? Tolstoy was faster than you. What’s the holdup?
I came to talk to Cecil. When does he show up, BTW?
I like the SDMB because it’s better than watching TV, it’s educational, and it’s a lot more funner. And when I’m up this late with nothing to do, this place is like an oasis in the middle of the Boredom Desert. Or is it Dessert? I should get a coppy of UncleBeer’s dictionary/thesaurus.
“I shot the sherrif, I shot the deputy too. No, it wasn’t in self defense. They both looked at me cockeyed so I capped 'em. Then I shot the mayor, then the firechief, decapitated the librarian, impaled the dog catcher, used a spoon to remove the groundskeepers eyes and sent the leader of the local KKK in full KKK uniform to downtown Manhattan. Then I made sweet love to the sexy 18 yr old intern, and it was all good.”
Well, GQ is what really attracted me at first - I love learning things, and where else can you find so many different new things to learn, and usually in such an entertaining way?
But GD has really been the most educational part of the board. I rarely post there because I don’t think my debating skills are in any way comparable to most of the regular GD posters, plus someone has usually stated my viewpoint much better than I could have! But reading the debates has been a real education in how other people think and view the world, which is a treasure beyond price. Thank you, Cecil and all, for providing a forum that has broadened my mind! (No comments on the rest of me!)
And of course, there is always the educational value of the BBQ Pit . . .
I have a firm grip on reality - now I can strangle it.
Been here a while, have never posted. I am here because I have never seen such a fun group of people posting about who knows what from day to day. I have laughed quite often while here. This place reminds me of “Callihan’s Crosstime Salon” written by Spider Robinson.
you will have to drag me away from this board.

I don’t know how long you’ve lurked, but now you’ve gone and posted. You’ll do it again.
In agreement with posters above, if you feel the need to loosen your ties with the board, take a break or just leave, we don’t need the dear john letter and it won’t make any difference. I kind of cooled it the last week after (hmmm,…what was the last bit of unpleasantness…can’t remember).
I enjoy the questions, a very few of which I can contribute to the answering of, and I’ve actually gotten to know a few of y’all, so it’s also a social thing.
You guys are smart, funny, and generally know what you’re talking about (and if you don’t, someone else will point it out, tout de suite!). I’ve learned a lot hanging out here, and had mad giggling fits from the wit.
I’ll continue to do so - but real life intrudes from time to time, so I’m occasionally “away” for a while.
Thanks for doing your bit to advance the cause of human knowledge.
Brilliance, absolute compendiums of detailed knowledge, wonderfull debating/sparring partners, and gifted comic genius.
If I left, none of y’all would get to experience any of that.
(runs out of room as assortment of dictionaries are thrown at him…)
[Cartman voice] I love you guys. [/Cartman voice]

“Y’know, I would invite y’all to go feltch a dead goat, but that would be abuse of a perfectly good dead goat and an insult to all those who engage in that practice for fun.” -weirddave, set to maximum flame
The incredible intellect, the aggregate compendiums of knowledge, the amazing wit and verve, the incredible debating and sparring talents.
If I left, none of y’all would ever see such things.

(Sorry about that; the first one timed out, the board went down, and when I came back, it wasn’t in the thread.)
