Yeah, it’s hard to take you seriously when one of the ones you cite is Jessie J, though, isn’t it? Good songwriter and all , but terminal case of Theatre-Kid Face and I really, really don’t see the political nous. Unless you’re talking about the gender politics of Do It Like A Dude, the one Jessie J song I do actively hate.
And Adele does occasionally touch on politics - Hometown Glory, for one.
Adele’s talent is that she can interpret a song. Listen to Someone Like You-not the horrible remix with the band but the original with just the piano. I personally think she conveys a depth of emotion that is more than just “my boyfriend broke up with me and I’m sad”. She can really really sing. Don’t get me wrong, I like pop teenaged angst coughKellyClarksonTaylorSwiftcough* but Adele has a complexity to her voice that they lack.
I think it’s the emotion and pain you can hear in her live version of “Someone like you” that really strikes a chord in most women I know.
I’m sure I heard somewhere it’s the most chosen song at karaoke in the UK just now - lots of angry women out there howling it at their ex’s, making her our superstar.
