Why is Colibri a Moderator?

Well, that settles that. Now if I can only find out why is Alex Trebek still a moderator.

Oh, I didn’t mean here…

Yes, but so is Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec’s “Hummingbird from Paradise.” His worshippers placated his thirst for blood by offering him hearts ripped from the chests of sacrificial victims.

I prefer single-malt Scotch, personally.

So heres to Colibri
The mods very model
Who can also pronounce
Quetzalcoatl.

Just wanted to make sure this bon mot did not escape the thread without the respectful golf clap it deserves.

Not only is Colibri a moderator, and ancient Aztec god of war, he’s also the inspiration for what was, arguably, the finest Humming-bird based shooter on the Sega 32X. They mispelled his name, but “what 'ya gonna do, eh?”

PS. Bonus points to anyone who gets the reference above.

Well said.

And if I ever learn what a golf clap is, I think I’ll propose one in honor of Post #61.

I keep telling you, those are groupers, not groupies. Big difference.

Speaking of groupers…

Q: What’s the difference between a grouper and a SDMB mod?

A: One’s a scum-sucking bottom feeder, and the other is a…fish.

I resemble that remark!

Actually, the description of groupers on Wiki could fit our Mods quite easily.

Groupers are teleosts, typically having a stout body and a large mouth. They are not built for long-distance fast swimming. They can be quite large, and lengths over a meter and weights up to 100 kg are not uncommon, though obviously in such a large group species vary considerably. They swallow prey rather than biting pieces off it. They do not have much tooth on the edges of their jaws, but they have heavy crushing tooth plates inside the pharynx. They habitually eat fish, octopus, crab, and lobster. They lie in wait, rather than chasing in open water. According to the film-maker Graham Ferreira, there is at least one record, from Mozambique, of a human being killed by one of these fish.

I never knew hummmingbirds were so bloodthirsty.

Pack hunters. Tiny, feathered piranha.

Lotta good that’ll do me; some days I don’t get my own posts. . . .

Giraffe, welcome to the SDMB! If you have any questions, just ask a moderator or read the stickies at the top of each forum. I hope you find your time here pleasant. Just try to develop a sense of humor and stick your neck out from time to time. Again, welcome!

jimmycat, your posts make me to think you could have some fun here once you learn the rules. Welcome!

Golf clap is what you end up with when you’ve let a dirty caddie shag your balls.

If there are no trees where he lives, perhaps there is a lampost?

Kaylasdad99, a golf clap is that soft, quiet applause snooty WASP types are often depicted giving in TV and movies.

BJMoose, it’s an old running joke that pops up once in a blue moon over at Penny Arcade. The joke is that they use to give out twelve made-up awards each year to call out attention to noteworthy games. The awards were typically so specific only that game could possibly earn it. But one year they randomly picked an old game that they (rightly) figured almost nobody had ever heard of. What’s funny is that a.) there is no other humming-bird based shooter, so there’s no need to specify that it’s on the 32X, and b.) the use of the term “arguably” in all later references to the joke, because who would argue that it’s the best of a category in which it is the only entry?

And now I’ve killed the joke by over-explaining it. Mission accomplished :stuck_out_tongue:

Golf clap.

Anyone who speaks proper English?
