I would put it much further up than “born rich”.
Why this knee-jerk, rabid defense of her? The OP asked why the conservative media is so obsessed with her, and some of us have said why, and now the usual crowd is out there frothing at the mouth telling us why we’re wrong and why she’s the fucking Golden Child or something.
I personally don’t give a shit; I live 1500 miles away in a different state. But I think I’m reasonable in questioning the wisdom of the voters in that district for voting for a 28 year old with literally no pertinent experience of any sort, other than a few months of working on one campaign a couple of years ago. That’s a reasonable criticism. Where else would anyone take a 28 year old that seriously? Most people are maybe 5 years into a career at that point- long enough to be settled and start actually really knowing your profession or craft well, albeit far from having mastery of it. Another way to look at it is- what makes her special that the 28 year old bartender at your local TGI Friday’s doesn’t have? It’s not like she has a track record, experience, a pedigree, etc…
And that’s just what the conservative media is doing as well- questioning her experience, and throwing in goodly dashes of racism and sexism as well as a monster dollop of hatred for her policies.
Getting butthurt about whether being a part time bartender to pay the bills counts as a “real job” or not is silly. When people say “real job”, they generally aren’t talking about part time gigs or temporary ones meant to fill in while you’re looking for something better. “Real jobs” are jobs that people take for the long haul- it doesn’t have to do with the nature of the job itself. There’s a certain mindset that comes with having a real job- you have to be stable and make things work, as opposed to having a short-timer mentality.
This is gross and inappropriate for this forum. Don’t make these types of comments here.

Are there any working class jobs that you see as legitimate, or should governing be limited to only certain professional classes?
I don’t think I know what kind of job you have, but I do think I know what kind of job you don’t have, yes. I mean, you’ve said outright that “bartender” isn’t a real job and it’s clear that you don’t work as a bartender. So tell me more about all the jobs that you don’t think are “real” jobs; I can’t wait to see your list!
Of course. I generally would like someone have some job of some responsibility before putting them in the government is all.
And I worked many years in the bar and restaurant industry. Trust me, waitresses and bartenders who have degrees talk about getting a “real job” themselves, so the indignation here is pretty laughable.
Where is this knee-jerk, rabid defense you speak of? I see people questioning what constitutes a “real job” in your mind and why that is the only valid path to elected office. I get that you believe bartender is not. How about cashier? What if you’re a cashier with a career goal of store manager - is that now a real job because it matches your “career” requirement?
You are limiting valid experiences to what matches your life view, which is only one view of many. “Real jobs” come in many flavors.
Really? She’s a big deal for two reasons, but she’s in the news a lot for a third reason:
[ul]
[li]She ran a very good ground campaign against a “machine” pol, and won. She’s a campaigner a lot of other aspiring politicians are encouraged by and want a little help from.[/li][li]It is exciting to see someone backed by Brand New Congress, Justice Democrats, *and *DSA get into Congress. We need more legislators in that Cenk Uygur - Bernie Sanders range.[/li][li]But really, her being based in NYC means it’s been easy to get her on TV when she’s in her hometown.[/li][/ul]
She is still very young. She may fall on her face now.
As if.
No, the conservative media are, as usual, reacting to the stuff media companies are selling us out of NYC rather than doing any real reporting on the real America; because why pay any attention to the real America when you can just bust out a mean little chirp on someone else’s story?
And it looks like her “real job” could end up being in Congress, for a long, long time.
In fact, I’m changing my previous answer a little bit. I think she’s in the news in large part because of the three things I said: good campaigner, socialist with ties to a lot of left-reform organizations who need a success, and local to NYC.
Being a cute young thing does have synergy with two of those aspects. And being that cute young thing could be why some less cute and less young things dislike her. But mostly, we live in an era of responding to other outlets’ stories, to the detriment of our media.
And I know people who have retired after a full career as bartenders, waitresses, banquet servers and hotel housekeepers. Careers where they bought a house, raised a family, owned cars and paid for multiple college educations. But according to you, they never had “real” jobs, right?
When I want a real education, I turn to POTUS:
Look, having nuclear—my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart—you know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I’m one of the smartest people anywhere in the world—it’s true!—but when you’re a conservative Republican they try—oh, do they do a number—that’s why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune—you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged—but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me—it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are (nuclear is powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what’s going to happen and he was right—who would have thought?), but when you look at what’s going on with the four prisoners—now it used to be three, now it’s four—but when it was three and even now, I would have said it’s all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don’t, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years—but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us.
Next time you feel the need to criticize anything AOC has ever said, read the above batshit insane stupidity again instead, and tremble at the thought of that tremendous imbecile having his finger on the nuclear button.
I’m of the opinion that the people voted into office should be the ones to govern, I’m funny that way. Is a car mechanic qualified to hold elected office in your opinion? How about a janitor? What about a cosmetologist?
What about an orange blimp born with a silver spoon in his mouth?
Cool; now there’s a bunch of us asking to see CarnalK’s list of “real” jobs. I’m sure he’s going to post it any time now. He’s totally not backing away from a stupid argument with elitist overtones because he’s realized that’s what it is; that list will be here any minute now, I’m sure.
I think he likely committed crimes to get elected, so I am in favor of vigorous investigation and oversight of him.
That’s fair. I spend most of my time chagrined and face-palming at this president, but I try to call balls and strikes. Trumpian Babble is bad, judicial appointments have been good. It’s the same with Cortez. Cortezian Headscratchers are bad, and uh, you know, whatever good thing she’s done is good. I can’t think of anything off the top of my head.
Could that be because she has not yet taken office? Which brings us back to the OP, why are you obsessed with her?
Well like I originally said, she keeps saying hilariously ill-informed things, so of course she’s continually catapulted into the public eye.
Which some might argue isn’t a bad thing. No such thing as bad press in our hyper-polarized zeitgeist, as some might put it.
Well, she hasn’t done much yet, because she hasn’t yet taken office. Some people think that she will do good things (which is, after all, why they elected her). Time will tell.
You are being ridiculous. I stated a preference for a candidate that has held some position of responsibility in the past. I am not calling for the banning of janitors from running, I would just prefer at least a Maintenance Supervisor.
