I’m mostly with you, which is why I started this thread as a paean to the wonderful miracle of AC–except I have gotten increasingly sick of the cold too. I used to say I liked seasons, that it would be boring to live somewhere like Southern California; but after the past few years of living where I do now I think I’m just over the whole season thing.
This year has been especially illustrative. We endured a long, bitterly cold and snowy winter, followed by a spring that alternated between being windy/stormy and cold/dreary/drizzly. Which spring was *immediately *followed by summer’s stifling heat and humidity. (To be fair, I think we had about one or two days that were clear, dry, and pleasant — in the 70s.) We get hit by wave after wave of storm fronts with supercells, bringing hail, lightning, and flash flooding–not to mention tornado watches and warnings, sending us scurrying for cover to our dank, unfinished basement while branches or entire trees are sent smashing into our house.
And the seasonality ensures high year round electric bills to boot, with few days in the year not requiring significant heat or AC. My love of tennis, and the lack of any indoor facilities near me, certainly factors in as well. At this point, an endless, boring succession of sunny, windless, 75 degree days sounds pretty darn sweet to me.
Not sure it’s what we were made for, but I do, oddly enough, like a really hot sauna. In my former home of Minnesota, they tend to be nice and hot, more so than in most states; but nothing like Finland when I visited there. Insanely hot but it feels great. I don’t know why I hate hot weather but love saunas: maybe it’s just partly that I know it’s temporary and I’m sitting there naked not doing anything, as opposed to wearing clothes and trying to live my life.
My understanding is that hominids evolved in the highlands (circa 8.000 feet) of East Africa, which is where I was born, and also lived for a time as a teenager. It is not hot and steamy there (though it sure is down on the coast). Take a look at the ten day forecast for Nairobi: in the 70s every day.
I’d add too that the reason white folks like me have different skin and body shape than most Africans is that we have evolved to adapt to the cooler, cloudier climate of northern Europe.
