Cafe Society on sexist musical acts. Said thread has attracted their defenders, yes.
This board already had its misogyny war like a year ago. We even got new rules passed wherein guys can no longer make boobie jokes in a thread that’s about bra sizes (Or whatever).
If someone can make a good case for being offended over something, there’s a good chance that something will be banned.
Sounds like you followed the discussion very closely. (Or whatever.)
Once again: before you can ask WHY something is true, you must first demonstrate that it IS true.
Two threads that sort of vaguely exemplify what you’re talking about out of the entire board isn’t a terribly convincing demonstration that misogyny is a major problem, IMHO. And it is not at all a demonstration that it is worse now than in the past - you don’t even attempt to address that.
Damn right I did. But nobody posted any jpegs even after I asked dozens of times.
This seems to be a cyclical trend, not just on this board, but in our cynical society in general. This has come and gone in waves ever since the feminist movement first began to agitate that misogyny and rape be taken seriously. Or perhaps since even long before that.
In recent months, the Justice Department has been launching investigations of colleges, and imposing new rules, regarding perceived laxity in pursuing complaints of alleged or perceived misogyny and sexual assault.
The shooting in Santa Barbara, furthermore, blew that whole debate wide open.
On the other hand, every time that comes up, there is always (surprise, surprise) a backlash. The whole subject ends up escalating into a hysterical shitstorm, where no further rational debate can be had.
Witness, for example, this recent op-ed backlash by George Will, and the shitstorm of backlash to Will’s backlash that has ensued.
But the over/under on the age of those acts has got to be 30 years ago and there’s a lot of obscure bands. It might better have been titled sexist has-beens, never was, and one-hit wonders. If you’ve got to dredge up a bunch of geriatric crooners to find a sexist act that says something.
You’re spot-on and aren’t missing a thing. An unfortunate trait of this board is that it attracts the type of passive-aggressive males (I hesitate to say “men”) who obsessively dump on women as a stress response, while passing it off as intellectual curiosity.
Zeldar is an equal opportunity pollster. I just assumed that once the one on women is done, he’ll start one for men.
I don’t think so. It’s pretty common to have “trending” waves of some subjects or points of view that come and go and eventually we regress to the mean. Plus the Board culture seems to be one of letting people have enough rope to hang themselves and letting their own words indict them.
I think the board skews slightly socially awkward and slightly male. When combined these two traits create an immaturity towards women, if not outright misogyny.
I’m kind of a newbie, but I see the board as hypersensitive to misogyny more than anything and I think misogyny card is not applied evenhandedly. For example, I read a thread about people hating kim Kardashian, finding her unattractive etc. No complaints of misogyny there. But Maggie Gyllenhal, if you don’t like her you must be some sort of misogynist.
I think the biases of the board lean more towards undervaluing people who have low wage jobs, or did not get high grades in school, people who go to community college - by along long shot. IME every group of people has an “other” I just see that as a whole this board’s other is not women at all.
Fixed.

Probably true, but that means SDMB doesn’t rise above it. Pretty much any discussion that deals with female anatomy results in a bunch of “show me your boobies” comments; and there is a subset here who find rape jokes heelarious.
Laughing at a rape joke no more makes you a misogynist than laughing at a dead baby joke makes you guilty of infanticide. Rape jokes are funny because they are shocking and horrific, not because I hear them and go “wow that rape sure is great and funny!”
It’s against the rules here to change other posters quotes. Don’t do this again.
Which is what started the whole thing in the first place, because it got so fucking annoying. People were tired of it.
You got it all wrong. Its about equality. See, if those threads were about “The Least Favorite Person” (or whatever), no women would even make the list!
Someone’s just tryin’ go give the ladies a little equal time!
