There are many forms of music which are acquired tastes. Many people dislike ountry music, for example. A lot of people don’t get jazz. Classical music is very much an acquired taste.
What I find interesting is that people wouldn’t say, “Classical? That’s not music,” but they do about other musical forms.
I have found that the musical forms that get the “not music” label to either be:
a) Mechanical in nature (as in, made with machines) such as industrial music and a lot of dance music.
b) Black music. Jazz was termed “not music” by fans of more classical fare, as was the blues.
What I really find interesting is that the genres which combine the two above - namely DISCO and RAP - have got the most negative “that’s not music” commentary of all.
Now, I don’t know what this means, exactly. But I do know it’s there…
