Why is the acting on CBS's NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) so very bad?

Re NCIS, it’s just god awful! The characters are cartoonish even beyond the bounds of the other CSI procedurals, the scripts are barely passable, half the “science” is “gobble-gobble” tech speak made up nonsense, and the supporting actors are barely competent.

Why? Why is this show so bad?

You don’t read my threads any more… :frowning:

I disliked the show until I realized that it was supposed to be campy-bad. Watch it as a straight-faced parody of the more serious cops-'n-corpses series.

Well… for you Twickster… and with the Doc’s campy excuse (which admittedly is about the only one that works) …

Hmmmm…allright I’'ve changed my mind (for you baby!) … It’s GRRRReaatt! Bring it on! Harmonize me! Make the male investigator grab his crotch more. More Goth girl techno babble! More Illya Nickovetch Kuryakin! More! More! More! I’m still not satisfied!

Hey! Where’s the popcorn?

WOOOHOOOO!!! I LOVE NCIS!!!

Ahem.

I like Mark Harmon - I don’t know what it is, but I always have - he’s just so dry yet warm, I’ve always liked everything I’ve seen him in:
Summer School, that Marlee Matlin series where he was the interpretor/investicator, West Wing.

Also, they do this thing where they throw in pop culture references like real people, rather than having that “say the reference then pause so everyone catches it” thing most other series do. I like that.

And the Goth-Babe is seriously cute. Sure, it’s all made-up science, but the thing is, I realised this isn’t a CSI-style procedural, it’s about more holistic investigation, I guess.

I feel this way about most CBS dramas, esp. the CSI shows. I think the networks just have different house styles for their hour-long dramas: CBS has high-budget production values, great lighting and skimpy scripts; NBC has great scripts, decent casts, and tighter budgets (Ever notice how many L&O episodes are shot in front of the same brownstone? How many evil businessmen are busted in the same office and boardroom?); ABC shows have no budget and go for broke on shocking scripts; FOX and WB hire Abercrombie & Fitch personnel straight from behind the counter and slap together shows around them.

astro honey, I thought you’d gotten over your jealousy about my Mark Harmon crush, I really did. Sorry to rub salt in those wounds.

I can’t defend this as a good show with any kind of straight face – I do find it entertaining, though.
