Why is the Farscape DVD collection so expensive?

I was looking for new TV shows to try and have heard good things about Farscape, but everywhere I look, the season one boxed set is insanely priced compared to other shows. It doesn’t even have a lot of special features. What makes it worth 2-3 times what the other science fiction shows are going for?

WAG, but maybe because there are fewer fans and because Farscape fans are unusually devoted?

Don’t have a good answer for you, other than the producers going for the highest price the market will bear. The “Starburst Edition” of the show began rolling out a few months ago, this package is a better value and has a few extras. A review of the first offering is here.

I really wish we were in the Pit right now because I just managed to complete my Farscape DVD collection with all of the season sets, and just got season four.

Now they do this. I was DYING for commentary, and these sound AWESOME.

Dammit. I guess I’ll be spending some more money.

I decided to be crazy and order season one, price be damned. It was $85 with shipping. I hope I like it.

You will, I’m sure:). If you have any plot or character questions, feel free to email me. I’m about to start on Season Four here (I put a DVD on when I go to bed every night - my husband turns them off when he comes to bed), and I’ll be in a Farscape-kind-of-mood for a few weeks.

Oh, and just a word of warning - the first few episodes do move a bit slow as they get character development and storylines set up - but I promise, if you’re anything like everyone else I’ve known who watches it, by Episode Six, you’ll be hooked. I went back to rewatch the early episodes after seeing the entire series this year, and really enjoyed them a lot more.

That’s funny; when I rented it, they were the same price as other season groupings…

Farscape was one of the first shows released on DVD, back when it was still new and following the VHS model–2 episodes per DVD, few features, each sold seperately. Full-season sets didn’t come along until Farscape had already committed, and it took even longer for them to break down and tape up all the individual DVDs into a package.

According to Murcielago’s link, they’re doing it again, so maybe they’re just nuts.

Me, I’ll pay $40-50 on a whim for a show I’ve never seen before, but I can’t commit to Farscape, a beautiful, fantastic show.
