North Dakota has 120.1 single men for each 100 single women, according to the census.
WHy would there be an imbalance like this?

Women are smarter? (Kidding!)
349000 men, 291000 women 640000 total
58,000 difference
Minot air base pop is approximately 13000, including family members.
That’s not it.
Migration? It is one of the primary reasons for gender-based population differences where birth figures and health care are equal.
I’m gonna guess it’s the oil and gas industry; that generally draws a disproportionate number of men to come work.
Where do you get this figure? The overall sex ratio (including children and married people) is 100.8 according to this. I haven’t found a separate figures for single people on the census website.
I should have tried searching for “unmarried” instead of “single.” This PDF file says there are only 95 unmarried men over the age of 15 for every 100 unmarried women. But if you only count people over 15 who have never been married, the ratio is 136. That means there are about 20,000 more never-married men than never-married women in ND. I don’t have an explanation for the disparity.
Oops.
Need the percentage of single people in the state.
It looks like a common pattern for there to be considerably fewer never-married women than never-married men – it’s not confined to ND. For the US as a whole, it’s about 32.4 million never-married men and 27.5 million never-married women.
My suggestion for the reason is that women generally marry for the first time younger than men.
Could some women have identified themselves as “multiple” rather than “single”?
Perhaps the state’s culture is more friendly toward women with multiple personalities.
Or, maybe there’s a polyamorous, reverse-Mormon vibe there.
I’d guess ND is somewhat similar to Northern Finland - up there, away from everything, few jobs, harsh winters, and an imbalance in the gender ratio. As things get worse (or better elsewhere), women move out, men stay put.
It seems like a 13,000 person Air Force base could make a pretty big dent in that number.
There’s no shortage of jobs in ND - they have the second lowest unemployment rate in the US, after Wyoming, at 3.5%. Of course, the type of jobs available, and the pay are another story.
