Why is this website slow?

i have the same problem

this is the slowest message board i ever have visited. It sucks

it’s slow and i often gets an error message in the end when i post

(i use 4-5 minuttes to open this thread an i will probably use the same to post my reply)

The slowness isn’t a problem, it’s a feature! It’s designed to give you time to think about your response, to cogitate on whether or not it actually contributes to the sum total of human experience, or is just an ego-wank. Be thankful the Reader cares about you so much that they incorporate this subroutine into their message board.

Of course if you’re like me, You put your post together. The Board freezes up and by the time the Preview comes up you forget to verify it and submit garbage.
I’ve heard we are do both Software and Server upgrades soon. I am hopeful it will reduce the problem, though I recognize the problem won’t go away.

The preview just took 90 seconds, in that time I went back to coding and if I was flipping screens I may not have gotten back to the post for up to 10 minutes or so. Good example.

Jim {some would say I only submit garbage anyway so it doesn’t matter :slight_smile: }

When it times out on me the entire reply window is lost. Trying to Back out just brings a refreshed and empty reply window.
Usually I can recall most of it and re-post, but it is a royal pain. And it’s not considered normal for any other board I know of.

First, I think the Reader has built a fine message board. I think the mods and admin folks do a fine job. As evidenced by the subscription thread, there’s lots of fine people here. I think the 8 bucks is a steal for the value. I’d pay twice that frankly and still consider it a fair trade.

All of us are more likely to speak up when disatisfied than satisfied. It’s human nature.

But this technology snafu has gone on too long. I appreciate your weighhing in on a regular basis to keep us informed; your customers.

It is not our connections. Many posters—and I’m one of them—frequent other boards and to a person it is the SDMB that “sucks” as it relates to board speed. In my case, it is the only board that sucks. The only one. (I have cable broadband and use Firefox)

It’s time for some table pounding at the Reader. If it’s your software vendor, it’s time to issue an ultimatum with a time sensitive deadline: Get it right, or you’re out. Period.

If it’s a money issue, maybe there was a miscalculation on the pricing of subscripitions—maybe it should be $12.95 for a Charter Member and $15.95 for a Member. I don’t know; and I’m aware that those pricing levels** might drive away subscribers.** I suspect that some members wouldn’t mind paying a bit more to ensure stability of the board; others may not, or can not. Several boards have provisions for donations—I know that’s a harder sell when the owner is a corporation. (most of the sites that have donations are boot strap operations owned by individuals)

If it’s a priority issue at the Reader, I can tell you that at some point subscribers will not re-up for this reason. It would be sad to lose members over connection speed, when so many other things have been done well.

If it is a one-time over haul of some arcane software wizardry, maybe you do a pledge drive. Seriously. If you came to us and said, “It’s gonna cost $10,000 to do what needs to be done and all will be well; and that is $X per member…”, I suspect that many—certainly not all, or even a majority---- posters will chip in. I would.

But it’s time to get this done. You’ve asked us to be patient, and most of us have. But this two-minutes-to-load-a-page is getting old. Very old.

So, I’ll continue to be patient. I would ask you in return to tell the brass that the natives are restless. Pound some tables.

testing, testing, 1, 2…3…

The likelihood that it is a problem at the server end is so high that to suggest that it could be something else sounds like “passing the buck”.

Yes, in individual isolated circumstances connecting anywhere can be slow and cause timeouts. However, the intermittent slowness of the board is so long-standing and has been commented on so many times by so many people (and acknowledged a significant proportion of those times) that continuing to suggest that individuals’ problems may be due to issues not related to the board when they complain about slowness doesn’t make a lot of sense.

The board is intermittently slow, and intermittently times out or crashes often enough that that should be acknowledged as the almost certain cause when people complain of slowness rather than telling people to investigate much less likely causes.

Damn, that’s how I got here!

Thanks, Happy!

Q: Why is this website slow?

A: I know this. It was explained by this guy from Alaska. Let me see if I remember right.

You get a bunch of stuff streaming across that internet and what happens to your own personal internet?

I just the other day he got, an internet was sent by his staff at 10 o’clock in the morning on Friday and he just got it yesterday. Why? Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the internet commercially. The internet is not something you just dump something on.

It’s not a truck.

It’s a series of tubes.

I hope that helps.

Hi, Senator Stevens, welcome to the board.

I blame Gay Marriage

It’s not slow, it’s just specially gifted.

I agree with all of this.

I add that (using my dial-up connection  ) the SDMB is noticeably slower than all other sites. I usually have two windows open and the other window loads faster (whether I’m playing online chess, using another board etc).

I get pages that refuse to load too (until I restart my browser), but it is not so often as to cause consternation. Then again, I am a pretty patient feller. If I used the board more often, it probably would irritate me as well.

TubaDiva, I hope you have a good day despite all the criticism. May I ask wherefore your name, TubaDiva? I am also immensely curious about Bosda D’Chi Tricor something-or-other, I’ll have to ask him how he came up with that. Interesting.
