Why is Unreal Tournament so bad???

Absolutely, I couldn’t agree more. Have you guys seen that flame thrower? jesus christ…

Huh? There is no origianl Quake 3, it is all Quake3 Arena, so I am not sure wat exactly you are talking about

Have to taken a look at Unreal2???

http://www.unreal2.com

It will give D3 a run for its money…(But I will still pick up D3 as I was a HUGE Doom fan!)

My 2 cents (as if anyone cares  ):

Quake 3 has a really great engine. It has neat capabilities, smooth mp, and on top of that, it ran like silk, even on my old p200 w/voodoo1 3d card (just TRY and run UT on the same system). Now Quake 3 as a game really sucks.

Item 1. Floaty controls. The mouse code just feels laggy compared to UT.

Item 2. Small maps. I feel like I’m fighting in a closet.

Item 3. There are only two maps. Sure, the literal numerical count is higher, but honestly, they all divide into either “gothic cathedral” or “floating space platforms.”

Item 4. Wussified weapons. Yes, I know the weapons are all very balanced, but they only have 1 fire mode each and lack any sort of kick. Of course, that’s just me. I prefer wide scale devastation over precise, skill-based attacks any day.

Item 5. The AI code seems underpar compared to UT.

I dunno, man… Unreal 2 just looks like a fancier version of Unreal. Doom 3 looks like the game cinematics in StarCraft and such.

Full length shadows… on everything… ::joygasm::…

I’m gonna have to go with SPOOFE on this one. While Unreal 2 definitely looks way cool the drool factor of DOOM 3 is over the top.

If you can dig up the demo Steve Jobs showed at the recent MacWorld 2001 Expo I HIGHLY recommend it. You will not believe your eyes! This stuff is as good as the prerendered cutscenes in Starcraft (no joke). Amazing just doesn’t begin to cover it.

Of course, the demo was shown on a GeForce 3 video card and this nearly released card will cost you over $550. You can buy whole computer systems for less than that today!

Just the same I’m already saving up and my birthday list now only has one item on it…

I would love to have a GeForce 3. The GPU used for it is the same chip used in the Xbox, changed just a little to be as compatible as possible. I want to get one, but I already dished out the money and have had a GeForce 2 for a while. If do end up getting one, I’m probably going to build a whole new system to go with it. After all, there’s nothing wrong with having more computers to network together!

Now, I’m looking forward to Doom 3. We’ve had to endure years of the Quake crap (Well, it’s not really crap, but Doom was the last FPS I really enjoyed). Give me Doom back!!

Unreal 2 looks nice, but I think I’ll wait for UT 2. I like the multiplayer FPS, but for some reason I don’t get into the actual game itself very much.

Actually, there is a rifle that can pack that kind of a wallop–

BUT–

The death, if it hit your foot, would probably result from the blood loss after your leg has torn free…

AND–

There is NO WAY guys can run around shooting that puppy. Needs a tripod. And preferably nine hundred feet of padding in your shoulder.

Coming from Doom!, then DoomII, then beta-testing Quake and moving on to Q2 in then Half Life, I found Counter Strike to add an ingredient seldom found in online FPS games–

Strategy.

Problem is, all the people who are coming in from Quake and Unreal CONSTANTLY whine about ‘camping.’

Even if you’re snipin’ like Vassili himself, they’ll rag on you for ‘camping.’

There’s a FOUR MINUTE PERIOD you have, in which to rescue hostages/defuse bomb/help the VIP escape, etc.

Usually the round ends in less than a minute because one side feels like they need to RUSH RUSH RUSH and basically turn the game into deathmatch.

if you don’t rush with 'em, you’re a ‘camper.’

I’m hoping everyone sees ‘Enemy at the Gates’ just so they can finally understand the psychological appeal of cat-and-mouse, the accuracy of staying put in order to secure a position, and the tactical simulation of behaving as though your life depends on it adds such a level of fun to the game that is only touched upon when people think ‘hard and fast’ is the only way to go–even if you’re running, againandagainandagain to your death.

Pariah you play in the wrong servers then:) Where I play campers die, because running around shooting people is just superior:) Mostly because of grenades and flashbangs. On the server I play the only reason someone attacks and says someone else is a camper is to get them to talk back to you and shoot them while they are in the spawn point. Really, camping is only so good.

Besides, the Awp will not kill you if it hits you in the leg not going through anything. You go down to 10 life. 2 feet of concrete and it would do about 20 damage.

What rifle is that?

Listen…

With all this talk about ‘Unreal’ going on, I went out and purchased the game. I assumed you all knew what you were talking about.

What the hell are you guys thinking?

That game truly sucks. I’ve been trying to find a way to justify the forty bucks I spent on it… and I sure as hell haven’t found it yet.

The enemies ‘float’ around during their attacks and have zero interaction or movement in their strategy. They float. At some points the enemy literally flies above the ground going sideways while he fires at you. woooo… Let me feel the adrelaline surge… <snooze>

…and to fight the guys all you basically do is dodge and fire. <yawn>

What the fuck is the attraction? The graphics are O.K., but c’mon, you really are seeing something I’m not. Right?

Give me a fifteenth replay of Half-life any day. An old game beats this new one in an instant.

CNote, try fiddling with difficulty levels, or some of the mutators. Also, make sure you DL the latest patch.

CnoteChris, are you talking about Unreal or Unreal Tournament? If you bought the original Unreal, you should not have had to pay $40, the game came out in 1998. Even then, reviewers complained about the AI (or lack thereof), which basically consists of certain enemies instantly rolling to the side when the game detects that you fired a weapon in their direction.

Comparing it negatively to Half-Life is not exactly fair, as Unreal came out several months before Half-Life.

Actually I have Unreal tournament… whatever that means.

What it means to others, I don’t know. What it means to me, on the other hand, is that I’m bummed. I really was hoping for a game that could compete with HL.

I haven’t found it yet.

Spoofe-

One step ahead of ya.

CNote… “Unreal” is the single-player game (with an actual storyline and stuff) that preceded “Unreal Tournament”, which is the primarily multiplayer/deathmatch/CTF game.

And I don’t recognize the problems you mentioned in the slightest, frankly… maybe it’s just a difference in our gameplay perceptions?

-Correction-

I have Unreal Gold. Not tournament.

Different perspectives?

Yeah.

I’m all into good graphics and that, but gameplay must at least match that of the video. I mean, graphics are key, but bad gameplay gets old real fast. The same enemies, the same strategy, the same floating shit… give me something more already. Dodge and shoot… Dodge and shoot… Dodge… Ho Hum.

And I’m not particularily into the fantasy part of the game. Ghouls and goblins are O.K., if there’s actually something behind the scenerio. In this case, I don’t anything particularily spooky about the scenery. woo.

The last FPS I bought was Soldier of Fortune. I bought it as a joke, but found it to be pretty entertaining. Engaging enemies, interactive scenes, an entertaining story-line… all that bundled together, in one game, much like HL.

O.K. Revelation. Entertainment. That’s the key- Is it entertaining. In this case? Hardly.

<sigh>

I just saw that clip that showed the G3 and the D3 demo…Let’s just say I had to change my shorts…

A LOT of work will need to be done to U2 to get it to look like that…

(I’ll have to start saving my penny’s for that G3 card too…goodby Voodoo5…)

Have y’all had a look at Serious Sam it’s not a demo just a test for a engine but it looks fantastic. The one deathmatch level they have is fun to say the least. The single player / co-operative is very Doomy but that’s not a bad thing.

It looks fantastic and I love the headless guys that just run at you screaming and blow up when there close.

Can be found at http://www.croteam.com/ and is a mere 70+megs

Enjoy.

Crap. Serves me right for trying to fix a spelling error.
