Why is Unreal Tournament so bad???

Are you sure it’s Quake3 Fortress and not Team Fortress Classic? I’ve never heard of a Quake 3 Fortress (I’ve heard of Team Arena, but not a Fortress), nor have I heard of a UT Fortress.

Maybe I’m just out of the loop.

Quake 2 was very different in feel from Quake 1 - your character moved a lot slower, jumping feels very different, rockets behaved differently, the weapons were more balanced…

There was a lot more wrong with Quake than the color. Did you know that it was released about a year early? They rushed that thing SOOOO much…

Besides, what’s wrong with the color “brown”, anyway? Do you think a dungeon or abandoned based should be yellow or puce?

If you aim your rocket launcher horizontally, you’re a moron.

Fuck that. That means that the rocket doesn’t fire until after you let the mouse button go… the delay can be fatal. Turn the “Instant Rockets” mutator on.

Well, duh, a missile that creates a big ol’ honkin’ explosion is bound to be more powerful than a shotgun. Personally, I’m disappointed that the rocket launcher is as weak as it is.

For the record, I find the weapons in Q3 to be far more balanced than in UT. It’s only slightly more difficult to kill someone with the machine gun (starting weapon) than with the shotgun. And the shotgun is easy to kill too.

In UT, weapons like the Shock Rifle and Plasma Gun are never used as soon as you get a better weapon - I never bother with anything except the minigun, flak cannon, rocket launcher, or sniper rifle (or Double Enforcers, which is the funnest thing in the world) - but in Q3 I can be completely loaded up with rockets or lightning gun charges, but I’d still run around with the shotgun. Or the grenade launcher. Or… ooooh… the railgun (it’s so hard to make a good railgun shot, but when you do… ooooooooh…).

UT’s fun and all, and it’s definitely got more creative types of play and larger levels, but very few of it’s weapons give you the satisfaction of Quake 3’s guns.

Nothing is wrong with brown, but making a game that is basicly ‘one colour’ it nuts. There’s no veriety.

I agree…aim just a few feet in front of him.

Good point, but the guys I play with tend to stay away from the RL, so we don’t bother with it.

Make it stronger? Sure…in Q3. People playing Q<anything> love the blasted thing…they’d be in heaven.

If that is the case? Then why do Quakers tend to stick to the RL? (In my experience)

Not if you are a Quaker. The Shock Rifle is great. Some of the comboes you can get off with that thing just rock.

I agree with the Plasma gun…the range is to short.

I think that’s what UT fans look for…the creative play and not the ‘Just Run And Shoot’ type.

Ditto here.

(I just learned this trick)

If you know where to keep stocked up on rocket ammo on a given map then this isn’t a problem. Simply keep loading up rockets. If you reach 5 loaded rockets and have no target then aim for a likely place for someone to come to when your rockets auto-fire (like down a long hall if possible).

Otherwise loading rockets in this fashion acts almost like an instant fire weapon and surprises the hell outta opponents when they expect to dodge one missile and find 3 or four coming at them instead.

Agreed. Aim for the feet and you usually can get some splash damage. However…a horizontal shot can be fun if not necessarily reliable. On maps like DM-Pressure there are long hallways and firing 5 rockets down them can definitely be fun!

I disagree. While I certainly have preferences every weapon in UT can be useful in certain situations. The Bio weapon’s secondary fire is a pain but it is powerful. The Bio weapon is also a good way to get people off your ass (the shots act like temporary mines). The Razor(?) can be fun as hell in crowded situations. I forget the map name (the medieval castle) but I saw five guys in a room jumping around trying to nail one another and some dude standing outside started bouncing razors through the door and off the walls into the room. It was a freakin slaughter and funny as hell. No place in that room was safe!

It’s stuff like this that makes UT head-and-shoulders above Quake III. Q3 might be a little more visceral in its action but that wears thin pretty fast. It’s the unending types of mayhem in UT that keeps me coming back for more!

Try here for a pretty good (albeit somewhat dated) review.

This is the official page for the Gamevoice.

From what I’ve read and heard:

  1. Gamevoice is excellent for multiplayer team based play.
  2. Gamevoice is pretty good for PvP multiplayer (heckling ability mostly).
  3. Gamevoice voice recognition is somewhat spotty for controlling a game.
  4. Gamevoice has a disconnect bug that is annoying but can be gotten around.
  5. You do NOT have to buy the $50 Gamevoice rig unless you want the controller and headset. The software can be used for free as long as you already possess a capable soundcard and microphone. You are also limited to four simultaneous hookups with the ‘free’ version. (Although Doubleclick seemed to be suggesting that other software would get around this limit for free).

Well, in answer to your questions, I call it Quake 3 Fortress because all of the stuff for it (file extensions, menu mods) are all called Q3F.

In any case, it’s Quake Fortress, or Team Fortress or Team Fortress Classic, you know the game I’m talking about. If you aren’t familiar with classes like Engineer and Medic and Grenadier in a Fortress setting then you are not real gamers, but rather only Fisher-Price, retail gamerlings.

As far as Unreal Fortress is concerned, I can’t believe none of you have heard of this game! …And you call yourselves gamers. For shame!

Check out this link:

After that, you will see what I’m talking about. Who knows, you may hate it. You may like the cumbersome control of the nerfed-out sniper in Q3F. You may like that it takes a long time to build an autosentry, but only a second to destroy one, or that you can only build one. You may like that there is no cross-class interaction such as a minigunner being able to upgrade an autosentry.

Basically, it’s Q3F on steroids, because all the classes are very similar. However, UF has taken eveything that sucks about Q3F and eliminated it, and at the same stuff adding everything you wish Q3F would do.

Check it out.
[sub]PS-UF is is a mod for unreal tourney, you must have the full version UT and patched with build 420 for best results. But this game rules. If you liked UT Game of the Year edition, and you’re a Fortress type of Joe, you’ll cream your cargo pants when you play this game.[/sub]

Check the color levels for Quake sometime. The engine (and graphics in general at the time of it’s release) didn’t allow for the 3D graphics AND vibrant color… something had to go, and color was it.

Again, iD rushed Quake way too much… they didn’t even bother trying to tack a storyline onto that game until months after it was initially released (yeah, it had some semblance of a plot… supposedly).

What, pray tell, is wrong with the Rocket Launcher? Oh, I see… it lacks “finesse”. This is DEATHMATCH, not a fucking fencing tournament. You want finesse, go play Jedi Knight (which was also a fun game).

Eh-h-h… I never try with the fancy stuff unless I KNOW that I outclass the people I’m playing with. Playing 'round can get you killed, boy!

Dude… try loading up some of the space-bound levels in Quake 3, with the catapults that launch you seven hundred feet. The height of glory is when both you and an opponent launch off of opposite catapults, and you manage to shoot him in mid-air. The ultimate Matrix Moment.

I agree, though, that Quake 3 doesn’t have nearly the level of customizability as UT. I just LOVE loading up a Low-Gravity Jumpmatch with Instagib. Or the Relics… oooh, Regeneration… Then there’s the automated Bot speech, something which Quake 3 tried to incorporate into the expansion pack (and failed, IMOSHO). Nothing helps immerse you into a game like the feeling that your teammates are ACTUAL TEAMMATES!! And the Secondary-Fire for the UT weapons always adds an interesting twist to things (especially for the Redeemer… launch the missile and then fly it around thinking, “Who am I going to kill? Heh, heh, heh…”).

There’re qualities I love in both games. Sometimes UT is too slow for me, and sometimes Q3 is too repetitive for me. Depends on my mood at the moment.

SPOOFE, I agree with you on all your points.

Q1- Was WAY to rushed…too bad too…it had potential.
Rocket Launchers - Yes…they really do lack finesse. =) Sure it’s deathmatch, but for me…a style kill is better than a regular kill

Q3 Space Level - Jump Pads…great invention…UT levels have them now. Those levels are great, but again, it depends on the mood…I like the hunt of DM.

Jedi Knight - Brilliant game…I just picked it up again for my son. Great DM!!
Well, It looks like I’ll probably be playing some UT tonight…My ICQ is in my profile…you guys can join in if you want. =)

SPOOFE:
I prefer the weapons in UT, but it’s pretty close. You can tell you are a Quaker though, because you would realize the shock rifle and the plasma or goo gun are actually quite useful. Keep in mind I was playing for a year before I stopped thinking they were a waste.

The all time useless weapon of course is the fists in Doom. Remember the berzerker power up? Utterly useless.

To those that mentioned Jedi Knight, fantastic game. One of my all time favorites.

And Oni has the best character animation I’ve ever seen. But the environments are really redundant and not very good at all. Bungie finished that up so they could get Take-2 off their backs and work full time on Halo. It shows. It was released a few months early too.

Oh, they’re useful, definitely… although I always found myself using them more in the single-player game than in the multi-player.

Which brings up another point… nobody can truly get into Unreal Tournament without playing it’s predecessor, Unreal. You can go pick up Unreal Gold for ten bucks. Give it a play… that game… the only First-Person Shooter (single-player) that’s better than it is Half-Life.

Anyway…

Since I always play UT with low gravity turned on (makes things more interesting), the Biorifle loses it’s usefulness, since the gobs of goo never land unless you point it directly at the floor. And the Shock Rifle would be a lot more useful if it had a better refire rate… as it is, it’s like a weaker version of Quake 3’s railgun. The difference is… the railgun almost always results in a kill. And the plasma gun isn’t NEARLY as powerful as the minigun.

Yeah, in multiplayer, anyway. In single-player, that was the ultimate Ammo-Conservation item. Go through the whole level just pounding the crap out of enemies… yeeeeee-haw!

It would figure, the first thread I have to go jump in on is in the Pit. whimper

ok, no one hurt me:

UT fans - bumping the game speed up to 115-120% makes it much more enjoyable for the caffienated “twitchy” types as mentioned earlier. The point that game speed is adjustable is a wonderful thing - especially for those who play with dramamine tablets in hand, or triple espressos sloshing over the keyboard.

QIII… I played Q2 DM from the games release to QIII’s release. I personally like the jump-pads (with a rail gun, great fun!) and the vivid graphics, however, the gameplay of Q2 I still feel was exceptional & I reinstalled it… perhaps nostalgia, perhaps I missed the jetpacks & grapplehook or maybe Nuget the hamster bot (though, they made a Q3 version).

A completely inane perk about Q3 I have to mention - the vocal aspect of it. One of the lizards has an angry squeal that’s just perfect (coughforincomingemailcough).

A frustration w/QIII - cost. You pay what, 30-40$ for the original, then another 30$ for Arena which added a few levels, a couple Multiplayer games and IIRC, a couple weapons. CGW put it pretty well by commenting that ID’s attitude towards gamers was “well, we’ll give you what you want, but we’re not going to like it!”

GeForce “slow”…I beg to differ. I have the Hercules Prophet DDR/DVI. I won’t say it was fun to (watch my husband ;)) install, but as far as games being choppy, glitchy, slow, etc. I have yet to experiance a problem (1024x768)… I went from a Diamond II & Monster 3D (together) - I had problems with that but not this.

Here’s a link:

If I could get my puddies on a GeForce 2, I’d have one by now.

Another annoyance with Q3 was the need to use the cd to play.

Understand that I’ve been a fan of ID since the Doom days and I’m more than ready to give them my loyalty…when they earn it. For as much as we looked forward to Q3, it was a dissapointment. While it might be a great game, it’s definitely not a groundbreaker and NOT what I expect from ID. Granted, at it’s worst, it doesn’t get a lemon-rating even close to Eidos’s followups to Tomb Raider… unless, of course, you’re only playing the game to stare at Lara Croft’s crotch and the glorified sweat bubble on her right boob. I still resent having to shell an extra 30$ into ID’s pockets for something they should have put there in the first place.

At this point though I can only comment that after playing UT for quite a while, going back to Q3 leaves you feeling like something’s missing. What that is, precisely, I can’t put my finger on (the book depository…the book depository…)…why? The CD is in the basement and damned if I’m going to go looking for it in that disaster when UT’s on my desktop.

Quake 1 had colors other than brown… like, green. Lots of green…green everywhere.

Quake II had some great levels - the upper and lower palace levels were especially colorful and eyecandy at the time.

Tribes 2 - I’m looking forward to that as well. U2 (haha) should be great -they’ve done well with single play, though some of the levels are so large and convoluted that boredom sets in easily. I’d like to see ID come out with another good single player game with an engrossing plot combined with a great mutliplayer setup.

Half-Life has a great plot and engrossing SP game play -I’ve yet to bother with the TFC aspect of it & I don’t think I’d even consider comparing it to UT or Q3 - maybe I’m still bitter over the shitty ending in SP.

John Romero - oh, but wasn’t it a treat to see his ugly little mug on the cover of Daikatana? :stuck_out_tongue:

No One Lives Forever -which of course, I’m having trouble installing, got game of the year in CGW - the SP is supposed to be hysterical. Good for bored folks who need some comic relief.

Ok, so here’s my bitch about all SP games in general -the endings…what the hell is wrong with game developers that they put a year, two years into a piece and slap on a 10 second clip at the end with credits?? Damned evil, IMO.
Meg

I have the 3D Prophet II 64 mb DDR GTS (Goddamn, that’s a lot of shit to write to say which graphics card I have!). I can’t say I’ve had many problems with it but one: Some older 3D games have problems running on 64 MB cards. Homeworld, Freespace II, and Descent 3 all crash occasionally because they lose track of how much RAM they’re using. The same problem happened with Diablo II, but they patched that.

Too bad some of those other games don’t have patches that fix it.

However, UT, TFC, and Q3 all run like Forrest Gump on my computer.

Here are some links that might help, I hope:

pardon the aol in the url:

http://members.aol.com/axcel216/video.htm -plenty of links.

good luck… I could ask the tech, but he’s snoring.

Meg

Damn you all are ignorant:) Haven’t any of you ever played counterstrike? It doesen’t have half the features that those other games have and its twice as good! It has more people playing it than either Q3 or UT and it got all that from zero advertising. It is a free mod off of half life(though now you can buy it with half life) and it has totally realistic weapons.

So, go buy that game (or rather for free if you have half life) and see why its just so much better.

Yeah. Not as fun when you can’t go online to play. (Sooooon… soooooooooooooon… Cable Modem will be mine…)

Cable Modem,
Who art not in my house.
Hallowed be thy bandwidth.

= )

I don’t think a sniper rifle that can fire a bullet through 2 feet of concrete into somebodies foot for an insta-kill is very realistic.

To be fair to the UT-ers in this thread…

I should have mentioned this before, but Team Arena (the Q3 expansion) sucks sour frog ass. There are only two character models - male and female characters - and you change their head when you switch characters.

That, and it sounds… harsh… on the ears.

The characters in Quake 3 are just so fucking colorful and outlandish - who doesn’t get a kick out of killing Orbb, or who doesn’t get intimidated by the massive bulk of Tank Jr.? - that these stale characters are too reminiscent of the old days of Quake. I thought we moved beyond a single model for characters!

I’ve been waiting for a game that offers a railgun like that, like in Eraser. A faster refire rate would be nice, too.

I can’t think of the name of the weapon at the mo. I just call it the wu-wu gun, but in Half Life the enery gun that can be charged up does just this. There’s a great satisfaction to be had in killing somebody who has just ran behind a wall or is on the next floor above or below you
