This topic has come up a lot lately, so I thought I’d get it resolved once and for all here on the SDMB. We also have a lot of ‘family’ members here, who might really know.
Who are tongue pirecings for? Oral sex is obviously one of the big reasons. My wife believes that if you’re pierced near the tip of your tongue it’s primarily to aid in oral sex on a woman, whereas if it’s further back, it’s to aid in felatio. A lesbian friend of hers said it just the opposite.
You know what I think? I THINK THAT SOME PEOPLE JUST PIERCE THEIR TONGUES FOR THE HELL OF IT! … and everything doesn’t have to fit in a specific catagory.
People get tongue rings for lots of reasons. probably all of the above.
BUT, piercing near the end is really dangerous!!! the whole reason they try and pierce in the middle, is b/c there is a nerve that runs along the outer rim of the tongue (pinch your tongue in the middle and slide it to the edge to feel the nerve bundles). If you damage that nerve, you could lose use of your tongue. Imagine oral sex then!!!

The idea of a small metal rod scraping up and down my most sensitive area does not sound like an “enhancement”. I think they do it just to try to be cool, not to be different because it seems like 1 in 3 people I see have one. Whats funny is that blue tongue and liquid meals they have to put up with for a few days.
I’ve got nothing against piercings per se, but this one seems pretty stupid in that it can really interfere with your life. I’ve known a couple of people with pierced tongues, and at least in them it caused a speech impediment when they had the stud in.
Andrea, I’ve got a question for you. When you decided to take the tongue stud out, how long did it take to heal? I know this girl who had one, and she told me that the guy who pierced it for her told her that if she takes it out for more than a day, then the hole closes up.
Shadow… I don’t know how long it took to heal I took the stud out and never tried to put it back in.
As to the ‘speech impediment’… after the piercing healed my speech was normal…unless I felt like altering it around the piercing… I don’t know how to explain that, but if your friends have speech impeediments related to the piercing, either the piercing was poorly done, or they are doing it themselves.
